difficulty opening or closing roof manually?

hi, I've had the roof motor problem for a while and so was just opening / closing manually. The dash buttons allow me to latch / unlatch the roof and then I just do the rest manually. The other day I tried to open it and it went half way and then just wouldn't go down any more, a lot of resistance. I checked that the extra luggage space things in the boot were in the correct position and they were. I checked the little red pull out cable to disengage the motor and nothing. Being stubborn I slowly pushed it back and very slowly by itself it started to drop down to the open position. I then tried to lift the roof manually to close it and it would hardly move. I had to literally climb into the car and with a fair amount of force pulled the roof back up and hopefully didn't damage anything. It is now closed again but it was a bit of a scary episode.

Any ideas why this could be happening? I do plan to get the roof fixed as soon as I can but the weather is just too good and it's bugging me that I can't drive with the top down. HELP!!!

Thanks for that, I've been through the pages on how to replace the motor, in this case I just want to know why the roof is not opening manually and to see if I can do anything to open / close manually until I can replace the motor. It was opening and closing fine and all of a sudden not doing it?

Anyone had any joy with this? I have the same exact same issue, I've been bypassing the hydraulics since October & now it just doesnt want to move down freely :/
