Differential input flange - warranty help

Hello all

Zed is in the dealers today for a couple of warranty bits including for them to confirm that my "knocking" noise is the below TIS known issue

(this also has affected some others on here )

http://www.shipkiller.com/SI B 33 0...nion is insufficiently greased - Aug 2009.pdf

Got a call from dealer to say yes this is the problem but it would not be covered under warranty - but without a real explination as to "why". Total cost to do the work for this £380 ish, mostly labour, few quid for 2 bits. They advised this is wear and tear...really? They said the part has become "dry" and requires lubrication.

I have challenged them and waiting for them to come back to me. I referenced the BMW warranty policy handbook .pdf and referenced pages 17 and 21.

Thoughts would be appriciated

Cheers!
Jamie

I just had mine done by my Indy...2 1/2 hours labour @ $80/hr to drop the exhaust and heats shields and remove the propeller shaft. If BMW won't do this under warranty I would take it to an Indy.
Having said that, I would suggest to BMW that the vehicle is under warranty and that includes service. They don't list the flange as a service item yet they are telling you that the part has become dry and requires lubrication...seems to me if parts need lubrication then that should be a service item and included in regular service...good luck. The 380 quid seems very high....I paid $250 or equivalent 160 pounds at today's exchange rate. I don't know what your Indys charge in the UK but go with 2 1/2 hours labour rate plus some minimal shop material charge and taxes. Could be BMW wants to replace the differential seal while they have it apart...my Indy did not bother as it was not leaking.

Hi - thanks for your response, i was watching your other thread on this

your idea and thought tie in with mine exactly. The warranty states that all "All internally lubricated components" are covered. Is this part internally lubricated?

Im looking at the T &C to try and push them into a corner with this one.

Yes - they "lubricate" other areas during a service and so if this problem is due to it going dry and they know about it - it should be part of standard servicing. But since they cant get to it - it isnt...

interesting

would be interested to hear about what other forum members have to say on this one....im not giving up!!!!

No it's not lubricated internally and since it's such a bitch to get at it's not lubricated externally either...IMHO it is a design flaw.

Good point - so BMW acknowledge its an issue via their SIB bullitin but covered under "New Car Warranty". and the fix is to lubricate it. Yet, it's not lubricated internally and since it's do hard to get at it's neither a servicable item to routinly lubricated externally either.

Do i have a case here?

Any other words before I write to Mondial Assistance (BMW warranty) ?

All I can suggest is that you document the facts as you know them and write a polite request for assistance with the cost of the repair. It is a documented issue...good luck with them. If they respond negatively then I suggest getting a good Indy to do the work.

its a shame we have constant battles with BMW and Dealers when they should just sort things out and ensure returning custom!

Updated a separate thead to say its getting done by BMW today FOC :)
Glad you're getting in sorted.... but as others have said, why oh why do BMW always battle against doing these repairs? If this part is something that needs lubricating, then it should be part of the service. If not, it's a fault... :headbang:
