Differential input flange grease

Hi

My diff is making the typical 'clunk' noise.

Thinking I might grease it this weekend - Looks like not too bad a job

I've got the BMW guide and the SIB from Shipkiller

Does anyone have a guide or photos etc. of doing it themselves please?

Does anyone have any experiece of doing it themselves before I go ahead and do it just to avoid any obvious pitfalls?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Good luck with the job Andy and let us know how you get on. Mines had the clunk for a year or so now so may have a go at it myself if you reckon it's not too much hassle. Cheers.

Cheers mate

I'll be doing a detailed guide of the process to put on here. I'll let you know the difficulty.

Hopefully it will sort the problem as it is driving me mad! lol

Cheers

I took mine to my Indy to get done, took a few hours and was quite fiddly

Thinking of going Indy as well. Didn't realise the exhaust has to be dropped. Ok if you have a pit or lift but wouldn't fancy doing it on axle stands. :-)

I've a number of other things to do aswell. Fitting a new fog light as one is smashed, new ARB bushes front and rear, CDV removal, bleed brakes.

Well I've got some ramps so ill be putting the rear on ramps, prob have to jack it and put them under, then the front on axle stands.

Well I will make sure there's a thorough guide. Looks like a lot of people in a similar situation. Could do with knowing the AF size of the nut holding the drive flange in place.
Exhause only needs removing from cat back...easier said than done sometimes

Well...

Didn't end up getting it done

The nut/bolts on the exhaust flange (the one at the front of the car) were totally corroded and I didn't have replacements or gaskets.

So next weekend is going to be when I do it...Should hopefully have use of my mate's pit which will make things a little easier.

Has anyone dismantled the exhaust flange here? It looks like the studs are pressed into the holes (also read this on other forums) so I'm just going to put some grade 10.9 nuts and bolts back on if that's the case

You WILL break the bolts if they are corroded, well I did !....they look like they are part of the down pipes so you will need to drill holes in the down pipes once you break the nuts/bolts and buy some new stainless steel ones.

Theres not much room under there but if you have garage facilities, compressor and decent air drills etc then it shouldnt be too much of a ball ache.

Yea thought that maybe the case

Shouldn't be a problem sorting the flange to accept bolts

Won't be buying the BMW ones - very expensive - think they are Inconel from reading around. Not really worth it in my opponion.

Update:

Completed the job today.
Will be compiling a guide soon.
Wouldn't attempt this without a pit/car lift.
The actual removal of the prop shaft from the drive flange and greasing it was really easy. Removing the exhaust was easy. Removing the studs from the exhaust flange however was just awful

I'd bought new bolts with the intention of removing the studs. When undoing the nuts (had to use my Irwin nut extractors as the nuts were heavily corroded -these are an essential item for any home mechanic - they are awesome!!) the stud sheared. In hindsight I maybe should have applied heat to the nuts before removal. Although I think the heat cycling had probably destroyed the stud's mechanical integrity. Tried tapping them out but was reluctant to use too much force in case I damaged the cat. Next came every man's friend - the oxy-acetylene torch. Great fun. But no joy. Some 'creative' work (will post pictures) with the angle grinder finally shifted them. Nightmare!! However the engine did sound properly awesome with the exhaust off!!!!

Seems to have cured the main of the problem but the drivetrain still has a bit of noise. Will see how it goes on. Does sound much better.

Think I will be feeling the pain of today's work in the morning!

Still needs some tidying up etc.
