Different satnav computers pre/post facelift?

Hi
Is there a difference in the satnav computer drives (the DVD drive in the central cubby) for pre and post facelift z4s?

I think when I installed my Intravee I buggered the nav computers ram somehow - maybe I disconnected battery too quickly after ignition off and cut power before it shut down properly? I dunno, result is the computer/drive is goosed.

(Original thread here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=88573&p=1323189#p1323189 )

So anyway, got what I thought was a bargain 2nd hand unit from a breakers through eBay. Was described as coming from a 2003 z4 and working order. I have a 2007 coupe.

Indy tried to swap them over yesterday but said couldn't as it is different from my existing one. It is visually the same mk4 unit with I think same connectors, but apparently it is not compatible with my coupe. (?)

Old duff unit says France on the sticker on it and has a number along the top 9590 9 154 052-01.
Also has 12-06 on it which I guess is a build date?

The incompatible unit says Germany on the sticker and a different number 65 90 - 6 920 182-03.
(this one has 04-03 elsewhere on it - tying in with it being a build date and supposedly from a 2003 car).
Indy says that I need a unit with the same long number on it for it to be compatible.

So. Was there some kind of difference between the nav computer/drive pre and post facelift which is causing the problem? Or more likely seller not being truthful about where it came from and maybe coming from a 3 series or x5 or something?

(Could maybe be Indy not knowing what he's talking about too of course - but I trust they know their stuff so surprised if he was fobbing me off).

Sorry for long post.

Rich.

Urgh.
I've either been sold a duff unit or mechanic that doesn't know what he's on about then.

Tempted to try get someone else to fit and see if they get if to work, but reluctant to shell out more money to anyone.

I would try and have a bash myself - I even saved someone's thread from a few years back which had pictures showing how to take the plastic interior out (I think may have been a post by srhutch) but the pictures no longer appear on the thread.

Is there any way of getting the pictures back?
Or anyone who has done it before up for helping me in exchange for beer tokens?

Rich

Think those were my pictures as my imageshack account expired they disappeared.

Let me see if I got them on my pc here

That's great pvr
Thank you very much.
Just need the courage to go at it now.

Is there anyone out there done this before and willing to give some time to help me? I'm in Surrey.
Beer tokens on offer?

Rich

Could have been in order PVR :poke:

Don't worry about trying to get the small storage compartment out either just behind the handbrake. The panel it's in is removed vertically so doesn't need to be removed, and it is a pain to remove.

It rejected the pictures a few times, so it had a mind of its own and I could not be bothered to fix it afterwards :P

I'm sure I'll figure it out.
Thanks

Have tried a bit more searching on this. Found someone post elsewhere (pretty old post tho) about a unit that forgets all its settings each time it's powered off and someone suggested to them that recoding it to the car might be needed.

Does that sound like a load of balls to you? If not, is it something an independent BMW specialist should easily be able to do?

Nothing to code what so ever. My retrofit units came from the US and France, and just worked without coding.

Reminds me of what you guys did to my car, and suggested we leave it like that after we headed for lunch

Good to see the original pics again of yours
