Different glass on mirrors?

Hi all,

I am looking for a mirror glass replacement, something that has a wide angle mirror on it, exactly like this:

but what I can find only looks like this:

(notice how the dots in my original image are replaced by that vertical line, and also that the "edges" of the glass seem to not exist in the actual picture)

Any thoughts why please? Is it because they are from cars with different options (e.g. I understand though that all Z4s have electric heated mirrors)?

No idea on the line, but the "edges" around the glass is only visible when it has tinted. So in daylight, the whole surface of the mirror is the same (like your 2nd pic) but at night, with a car behind you, it'll tint apart from the little area around the edge.

Is it only the drivers side which dims? I can't remember.

Might explain the difference in the edge as this is only on the dimming ones and not the standard glass. Image is probably for a LH drive car (most common version)

I think (although i'm not 100% sure) both sides dim on my car.
Thinking about it, if the passenger side didn't, you could still get dazzled, so it makes more sense for both to do it...

Yes, mirros dim on both sides on my end just as well. I thought in the picture I received that there are no dimming "edges", but I might as well just go ahead and get see how the mirror looks first by holding it in hand, then decide. What about the dots? Do only certain models have those, with the rest having that vertical line?

Both nearside and offside mirrors dim if you have the auto dim exterior mirrors. As for the glass, you would need to check it was the correct part number. You cannot tell from looking at it and only when power is applied and light shone on to it will it work. As for the line, it is always a line, the first picture is an illustration and not a true representation of the finished design just an artists 'impression'

@Angie4m: no, the illustration is something I made to point out how my right-side mirror looks right now. It has those dots instead of the vertical line. So it is not always a vertical line, but in the image I received with the mirror glass, it looks like it's a vertical line. That's why I was asking.

Is it really because that illustration looks just like the ones here with a bit of tweaking http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=LM12&mospid=52067&btnr=51_7255&hg=51&fg=07&lang=en & http://www.partsbase.org/bmw/z4-e89-z4-e89-roadster-z4-35i-eu-51-7254-mirror-glass/ however in addition to this different mirrors part numbers are avalible for different parts of the world, which you will see on the first link. I also am slightly concerned that you don't know that the 'lines' round the outside are only when the auto dim function is working, so at Dusk or night and when power applied.

Possibly you want to ask a bmw dealer where you are to see what they say or have a look at what's in he showroom. Not sure how long you've had your E89 but parts can be replaced with new, upgraded parts and I know that in the UK we have lines on our mirrors both nearside and offside and line or dot doesn't effect the use of the mirror.

Just a word of caution - I haven't had to replace any of these auto dimming heated mirror parts on the BMW yet, but on my old merc they were amazingly expensive.

Standard heated mirror glass was about £25 from the dealer / £10 from ebay OE parts vendor.

The auto dimming mirrors were not available from any OE vendor.... over £200 from the dealer per side.

Take care with them!

Matt
