Diets??

my weight crept up to 14 stone over the last few years , sugary diet, betta blockers and a lack of exercise, stopped eating anything sweet, no alcohol and cut portions etc , walking 10 to 12 miles a day , within 3 months back to 11 stone and holding it there :) Gym if and when the weathers inclement. Retiring made me lazy

I love stories like this and the OP's

I'm on Keto, down 30kg in under a year.

It's a great diet. I was eating meals such as 500g fried mince meat, covered in cheese.

Lots of bacon.

Lots of veg.

Yum yum yum!

Also exercise is of course good to do, but for weight loss it's no where near as important as what you eat. Cut the carbs! Eat more fat and protein.

Easy. Regular exercise (doesn't have to be gym based. Walking, cycling etc) and clean eating! Palio based diet with the odd weekend treats is good. You have to find an eating "plan" you enjoy. Shakes and stuff like that are the McDonald's of the "diet" brigade. Full of processed stuff. Weight baring exercise is a good idea as we get older as it's good for the bones. Don't let age become an excuse either! :P

That's some great advice.

One thing I've found is that people who don't have a weight issue can't see the problem. To them it sounds so easy. It's nice to see so much support, I will keep you guys posted :).

Staying slim is the single easiest thing in the world to do as long as you follow the Triangle rule.

The only real reason people put on weight is when their diet contains high carbohydrates in combination with high fat... that's it imho.

As long as you never eat high fat and high carbs together it's almost impossible to put on weight unless you really are guzzling 4000+ calories a day...

Adopt the triangle rule.

Protein is at the top of the triangle with carbs and fat at the bottom two points...

the point is only ever eat protein WITH carbs or protein WITH fat... never combine carbs with fat i.e. the bottom two points.

high protein combined with high good fats = ketogenic... great for burning fat as fuel.

high protein combined with high carbs zero fat = great for adding lean muscle and mass.

Adopted this my whole life and i'm 6% bodyfat with 150lbs of lean muscle at only 5ft 7"

Sorted. :) Good luck to all who fancy loosing a few pounds!

I generally think diets are nearly all designed in such a way that they only lead to one result. Failure. You will lose weight with all of them but nearly every single one works on a simplified method of completely removing one of the naughtier thing from any normal balanced diet. They are generally not healthy. The diet you have said you are on OP sounds bloody awful.

This is good advice. Everything in moderation as not everyone wants to be eating like and built like an elite athlete. Palio is a good basis for a well balanced diet but do some reading to understand what is in food, how your body deals with it and what an advisable amount of protein, carbs, calories, fats, saturated fats etc etc is. Get an app like Myfitnesspal or something and do a diary even if just for a week or so. It will let you see what you are taking in and work from their. You don't have to starve yourself or go on some stupid zero carb, eating meat morning noon and night, meal replacement shake bullshit diet. Moderation, balance and at least a little exercise are the key. And I don't mean you have to join a gym or start running marathons. Walk up stairs instead of taking a lift, Park the car a bit further from the office door etc. Small things.

The biggest problem is ignorance. Learn what foods are good and bad, it's not as clear cut as everyone thinks. You wouldn't pump any old fuel that you knew was killing your car in just because it was cheap and readily available. So why do that with your body?
