Diesel scrappage?

And the ///M going to £1,120 !!! :x

I know it's being said a gazillion times before, but there is absolutely no logic to road tax. The only sensible way is to put it all on fuel. The government can easily collect their money from the fuel retailers through the mechanisms they already have to collect fuel duty.

The golden age of motoring Is firmly in the last.

Yes £1,1120 will become the second hand value of an ///M :poke:

Reading sh1t like this makes me so angry. I don't like new cars and I don't want one. They mostly make crap these days anyway. This is the work of tasteless shallow minded to55er5 who think a car is nothing more than a tool to get from A to B. It is a big step towrds bullying us all into riding around in a butt ugly box of batteries.

It's also worth mentioning now that the 2017 car tax changes will not affect your current car, as long as you own it already or it will be registered to you before the 1st April 2017. It's onlt people buying a new car after that date who will be taxed under the new system.
Isn't the table a few post up for a new car

The new rules will only affect new vehicles first registered from April 2017.

Cars first registered between April 2006 and April 2017 will carry on being taxed as previously based on emissions (with exceptions for small manufacturers). This includes all Z4s except the earliest iterations and a tiny number of Z4MRs which were registered before April 2006.

Cars first registered before April 2006 will also be taxed as previously based on engine size.

And your point is?

Yes I know it's based on engine size and emissions to determine the band BUT the price associated with the resultant band is then based on f*ck all but greed and stupidity so your M will become a financial liability rather than an appreciating classic as you will be paying over £1,100 a year just to retain the option of driving it on the roads.

Hopefully I've got the wrong table but I cannot find any other info. on older cars so far and the Auto Express article suggests these are the new prices for older cars. If anyone can find any better info. please do post!

Interesting reading!
We have a 2005 Jag x type 2.5 V6 sport auto PETROL. About as sporty as a sprout, but I digress............

It went in for an MOT 2 weeks ago. This is a well serviced car (by me!). 72000 miles Emissions were: CO zero, HC zero, Lambda 1.000.
Which in laymans terms is just about perfect. The air coming out of it was cleaner than what was going in!!!
The MOT chap said that is a clean running petrol engine.

The car following was a diesel. Its emissions were also impressively low. BUT it stank to hell. The workshop was unbearable to be in, and thats with open doors.
i have diesels in my workshop, and after only a few seconds running I have to get them outside asap. Even outside the smell seems to seep everywhere and ends up back inside.

DPF's blocking, EGR's blocking, DMF's collapsing and killing starter motors with the debris, high cost of filters, Very high cost of fuel system parts (pumps, injectors). Filthy oil that comes out of them that you have to see and smell to appreciate how bad they are. Yuk.

No diesels for me. But thats just my opinion. i appreciate there is a far bigger picture though.

Andy.

The point is it wont affect pre 2017 vehicles i.e there will be no price hikes for our z4s..they tax rates will stay the same

I really hope you are right but that would mean that AutoExpress are wrong...

Our table below shows the standard rates of vehicle tax for cars registered on or after 1st March 2001 - you can calculate the tax rate for your car from this.

Current vehicle VED tax bands: table

VED Band CO2 Emissions Annual rate First year rate
A Up to 100 g/km £0 £0
B 101-110 g/km £20 £0
C 111-120 g/km £30 £0
D 121-130 g/km £110 £0
E 131-140 g/km £130 £130
F 141-150 g/km £145 £145
G 151-165 g/km £185 £185
H 166-175 g/km £210 £300
I 176-185 g/km £230 £355
J 186-200 g/km £270 £500
K* 201-225 g/km £295 £650
L 226-255 g/km £500 £885

Guess what I bought last weekend - an 18 month old (diesel) Discovery 4. This anti diesel trend doesn't paint a rosey picture for future values.

That said rather Disco 4's Road Tax is £295, compared with around £500 for the Disoc 3.

Mybe not for long! Looks like a 3.0 Zed will be going up from £295 to £650!

Surely if this happens most independant second hand car dealerships will become un-licensed scrapyards overnight!

That table is if you buy a car now (before April 17) what you pay for the first year. As other have said, if you already own the car it will not be affected.

So if you buy a second hand car after the 1st April you will pay the higher amount for one year then it will revert back to the lower figure?

Eg if I sell my Zed before April the new owner will pay £295 for their first year and the same each year thereafter but if I sell my Zed after April the new owner will have to pay an extra £305 to reach £650 for their first year then £295 each year after that (or until the govt change their mind again).

If this is the truth then it's a bit better than I thought but I think Auto Express need some new journalists as they made a right arse of of explaining that.

Going to the 'source' the .Gov website clearly says "The way vehicle tax is calculated will change for cars and some motor homes that are first registered with DVLA from 1 April 2017". Important phrase being "first registered", meaning when initially registered with DVLA, not first registered to 'you'.

.Gov site https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-vehicle-tax-rates-from-1-april-2017

If I'm reading it right this means the new regime only applies to newly registered cars after 1st April 2017 so hopefully it's panic over :heat:

Bloody well hope so but if that is the case why did the AutoExpress bell ends put the 2nd column of higher charges in a table with the title "Current (pre-April 2017) vehicle VED tax bands"? "Current pre-April 2017 vehicle" to me means it is already in existence and registered!

Another Autoexpress page 'Car tax what you need to know' nearly gets it right but missed the vital phrase 'FIRST registered',

"The new VED bands will apply to all cars registered from 1 April 2017 onwards. ........... Cars registered before April 1st 2017 will continue to be taxed under the old system".

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/88369/car-tax-bands-what-you-need-to-know

To be fair it did require the AutoExpress journo' to read two full pages of text on a .Gov website and succinctly condense it in to a news article, oh wait that's what researchers, journalist and their editors are for
