diesel M's

The problem isn't so much that you are ignorant, but that you spread misinformation to others....

would have been better if I was more timely, but I'll give it go anyway
I've no problem with posting links to support one's opinion, only ad hominem attacks.
Six links IS a bit much though.

Anyway... Back on topic.

Yep, sorry all you nay sayers are wrong.

It is inevitable! Resistance is futile!

I think its fantastic, I love the Ms but they are crap on the MPG. Its the best of both worlds supercar performance in a luxury package with 45+MPG!! How can you argue????
Run something like a Z4M at the weekend and the diesel M through the week! TBH with these new engines it will make the old 6 cylinder engine feel slow especially as BMW claim 'no lag'! The only thing missing is the sound and the rev range. which you could argue is the complete experience, and thats the camp I reside. But half the price for fuel and tax!? extremely tempting.

I am old school when it comes to the type of cars I like I much prefer NA to any forced induction but unfortunately EU regs will tax all cars big NA engines off the road. IS this progress?? maybe, maybe not. But don't slam the door shut before you have a go. I think they will be epic.

But then again Porsche are managing it with there new 911 CS, 0-60 in 4.1 and 35+ MPG. Not without any drawbacks tho, electronic steering instead of more traditional hydraulic steering to save a few MPG. Wrecked the car? I have yet to have a go but wont judge until I do, but my Mini Cooper S has electronic steering and its god awful the thing is all over the place under heavy acceleration. But BMW are creating some fantastic revolutionary technology with diesel and petrol forced induction engines and if they are as claimed they will be something to really really look forward to. But I am very welcome to change, I will not cut my nose to spite my face, new tech is progress and this is the direction.

Unfortunately it is a sign of the times, green, clean and time to bend over and welcome the EU.

castration .... So Krusty! Have you made your doctors appointment yet? After all. It's in the interest of having a longer and healthier life.

Your analogy is upside-down. The petrol engine gives you more fun, AND the longer healthier life (compared to diesel). Petrol = win win. Diesel is for noobs. :fuelfire:

Tom,

I agree with some of what you say but the SLK AMG has taken the approach I'd liked to have seen M
Division take.

No turbo M-car for me - diesel or petrol

To be honest. I wasn't really making an attempt at an analogy between diesel vs petrol. Just that there are about a billion different studies pulling us here and there to the point that one could just about go crazy and not want to leave the house for fear of something or everything.
There's studies that are polar opposites on the same subject. Handguns, no handguns. Nuke power or coal. Global warming is it true. One say yes the other says no. I'm to the point that I get sick of being bombarded by all these daft and politically/Money motivated studies telling me how I should live my life. And all of the studies you bring up about diesel causing most of the diseases known to man. Geez. I thought that fags caused lung cancer. I also thought being overweight lead to heart attack. Who'd have thought it was actually diesel engines.

erm.... Isn't that simple torque steer corrupting the steering, which is likely to happen in a powerful front wheel drive car regardless of power assistance method used...

I have no doubt that diesel engined sports cars will become more common in the next few years. Years ago turbo cars emerged in F1. Now diesels are doing well at Le Mans. The natural progression is for diesels to hit mainstream sports car. Doesn't mean I would want a diesel though ;)

It could well be, but it is self adjusting and doesn't seem to adjust particularly quickly I'm sure if it was hydraulic the experience would be different.

I know I'm dragging up an old post but doesn't th E89 have electric power stearing and there's nothing wrong with the stearing

Early electric units got terrible reviews everywhere. The newer units work on a different principle and are fine for most people.

Nothing wrong with starting a new thread, especially when your question has little to do with the thread you latched onto. :poke:

Having driven number of very recent big-engine diesels (namely the Audi A7 3L TDI and BMW 730d), I don't see why one can't wear an M badge. Both the A7 and 730d sounded good too. Heck, the A7 TDI sounded better than the A6 TFSI (new 3L turbo) I'm driving now.

Despite 9 days with my foot regularly enjoying the A7 TDI's torque, it averaged 8.9L/100km over the course of 1100kms. The A6 is currently sitting on over 15L/100km....

Change is difficult, especially for something people are passionate about, like M cars. There are always going to be naysayers, but I for one would love to be at the helm of one of these M Diesels, they will be awesome fun.
