Diesel e89??!

Warm summers evening, roof down, roll up to some traffic lights and let off the throttle and instead of some nice pops and bangs as you slow down and a deep rumble as you are parked up you can hear DAGDAGDAGDAGDAGDAGDAG.

There are many complaints about clattering four pots on here!

A good oiler doesn't sound that bad and if you drive within the torque range it's fine - an auto box seems to look after that aspect very well.

It's not all about low rpm torque, after all queen bodiceas chariot never had an elephant towing it did it!

No it didn't !

In a car bhp an torque are factors in how fast it will go and how quickly it gets there!

Switching between a 6 pot Z4 23si and a 640d - the Z4 feels way slower but the 6-pot petrol lump makes a nicer noise and has something less tangible that is more satisfying - soul perhaps - and a bit of finesse.

I think of the 6 pot petrol as a more civilised instrument compared with the brute muscle of the 6 pot diesel.

Light sabre vs Blaster.

Just to muddy the waters on the debate and the diesel dislikes,

Which would you prefer, a four pot petrol or a six pot diesel?

In anything other than a sports car I would take the 6cyl diesel. In the Z4 it would have to be the 4cyl petrol purely for the noise.

Good question if I compare our old 330d and Audi TTS as an example I liked the 330d engine for its torque and relative smoothness but I still preferred the 4 pot petrol in the TTS purely because of the nicer noise it made and the extra revs you have to enjoy and you don't have to endure the horrible noise you get at idle from a diesel from outside.

I had a good listen to the 3.0 Tdi v6 in her a4 and it doesn't sound bad .
Listened to it ticking over on the drive and blipped the throttle . It's fine.
Im starting to wonder if it's the Bmw straight 6 oiler that sounds dagadagadaga!

I don't understand wanting to put a diesel in a z4 (any sporty vert). It's just so wrong.

We own a diesel, it's very good at what it does, but it has a hard roof and lots of insulation.

I would say diesel in a zed is wrong, but after having a 335d mapped to 355bhp & now a 640d,if there's someone looking at doing lots of miles & want a vert then I think it would be perfect combination :D

It's never in dispute from a power perspective. But a Z4 is much more than just "power delivery", it has character and soul.

Roof down... Engine on... Chugga chugga chugga chugga.... Can't understand how anyone would want to hear that / not want to hide under the dashboard. :?

Should hear the sound of my 640d ! Think you may change your mind ! it`s not the old chugga chugga anymore :D

I'm glad it's not just me!
I would quite happily have the Audi 3.0 v6 engine in any car, saloon or soft top. Shed loads of torque and 250 BHP along with economy of a 2.0 petrol engine or better!

The blinkers need to come off Kermit! its still chugga chugga and so obviously an oil burner, I respect its economy for the performance it offers big time but it is unrefined in stop/start mode and sounds pretty rough a low revs and when pulling away, but you cant have it all ways with a diesel so you have to compromise in some aspects and refinement/noise is where you lose out with a diesel versus a good petrol for me. :)

Lee only stating imo a diesel wouldn't be a bad addition to the zed range. I wouldn't buy one lol. Some would.
As for that chugga chugga diesel 640,yours must be done in lol ours sounds great,so much so I've had people asking if it is a diesel from the inside. :D

I've heard an un-isolated 40d engine and it most definitely is a chugga chugga diesel. The only way to make a diesel engine sound okay is to make sure you absolutely DO NOT hear the engine, only the exhaust note. Problem is one of the delights of cars like the Z4 is hearing the engine & exhaust blended together with the top down.

In sport plus from inside as you go through the revs it does sound pretty good I agree but that's only down to the fake noise coming through the speakers though, maybe I am too hard on the engine but I just don't like the low revs and pulling away noise that is so obvious oil burner crudeness, what I cant argue with is its performance and you still get 40 mpg
