Did you buy your car with cash?

I wouldnt want to know peoples earnings, and im sure most would not want to disclose it,

But back on topic, I have always been of the mindset of paying for things as I go, and if i want something I save for it, yes, I know its a bit old fashioned these days, but I hate paying interest.

exactly the same as me. i never even run up a credit card bill unless i know i can pay for it at the end of the month lol

Bought everything I own, except the house, in cash.

Had a bad loan debt experience in my late teens / early 20s... now just wait till I can afford to buy it :)

To BMW they are selling you 2 products this way not one, so more discount can be given.

I always thought the finance people are different to the showroom... didn't think they got that much for selling finance :?

Saved for about 5 years, paid £24k cash.

I waned to get an aluminium briefcase handcuffed to my wrist but the dealer suggested a bankers draft. BORING

i would have went in dressed like a tramp with it in a netto/aldi carrier bag full of money and asked to test drive the thing. when i can afford an aston martin thats what im gna do :D

similar thing happened with my uncle when he was going to get a porsche. he drove in with an old 3 series. he said they didn't take him seriously until he place the order. lol

Have always paid cash for my cars, started small and worked myself up. I bought my 07 2.5Si Z4 in May this year for £16.5K from a dealer. The values holding up well and I also have my Ducati to play with, life is good. :D

SNAP - cash only, perhaps a bit old fashioned but whilst it's a depreciating asset would be the first thing to go if times got tough.

I got my first Z(2.5i) when i was 29 and last year changed to M(31). Love it. I had previously cars ranging from toyota celica/supra/rx-8 all paid in cash and realised what a waste. I can comfrotably earn £300 every month with 20k which will pay off part of my finance so why SHould I put it on the thing that depreciates anyway. Yes in-total you would have paid a lot more when u take a finance but guess what you could earn with the initial cash and also In case you need spare cash u have it. SO to me i can manage payments, have no problems with finance.
Other thing until the MR- i've not managed ot keep any car logner than 15 months(that was the previous Z), so finance makes mroe sense to me. Just my 2 pennys worth.

Left uni at 22, shitty job for 18 months then first "proper" (i.e. degree related) job. Been working in this sector ever since, although not in the same job throughout. Bought our first house (jointly with future-wife) at 22 while still in the shitty job and still driving my 5-yr old 1.2 Punto. Changed car once (Astra 1.5, woooo...) before using savings and a loan through work (50/50 split) to buy a decent £11k car. That was the only time I've borrowed money to buy a car, but I paid it back within 2 years. Changed car a couple of times each time using savings, took on a £300k mortgage 3.5 years ago :o, got married 3 years ago :o, bought a van , then - at age 29 and 364 days I bought a 54-plate Z4 for £10.5k, paying cash/savings. That was 12 months ago.

I'd rather have the nice house than a nice car and hence a rather large monthly mortgage payments, but not everyone's priorities are the same: if they were then the world would be a boring place, as would z4-forum :)

I think it's probably because I'm a tight-arsed Scotsman, but I don't use finance for anything except a mortgage which doesn't count :D

Don't tel anybody but I paid cash for mine from the royalties I'd earned as a body double for porn stars. :o

Btw learnt a new word last week - Switchcraft: the ability of (some) women to make large quantities of money disappear into nothing while out shooping.

Might also apply top BMW dealers.

I'm 28 in January and bought the car 18 months ago. Could have paid cash but opted for personal loan to save the house deposit. I live at home still and as with at least one other member I am waiting for my girlfriend the pass her exams which are taking place this week.

Next year plan is to buy a house. I am not selling the car. I am not reckless with my money (accountant!) but if I didnt get the sports car now I would have to wait ten years or more once the house, kids etc all come into play. Buying it early meant I got the car and can enjoy it. Seamed like a no brainer really.

Some great tales in this thread. From the other end of the age spectrum i would advise people to go for it before you get stuck with supporting family, her kids, then when kids move back, then out again, then back again with grandchildren, then want "help" with their mortgages. I did the same sort of route others did, pay cash or pay off finance early to avoid interest but in that case it was beemers with two wheels.

Had six, three year lease contracts through the NHS which used to be a good deal and then bought the zed when the lease ran out and I left the NHS

WTF's !! it got to do with you Mr Dreamer how the youngsters afford their cars
Congrats on being financially astute and earning well in excess of the average wage, but some people want to live a bit and do it younger......... More power to them ...... You save for the future mate

Possibly a little harsh Mik!

My wife bought me mine for my birthday. Talk about being tight with your money - you would have thought that if she was going to get me a car it would be a new one. Well I suppose the CSLs she just gave me go some way to make up for it but I'm not letting her off the hook unless Santa leaves an ESS Supercharger for me under the Christmas tree.

I would have loved to have a car like this in my twenties, but twenty years ago they where not around, but took finance out to buy my first cars , sptifire, X19, XR3 etc (all old and relatively cheap compared to a Z4) as i had a horse and was not prepared to spend all my evenings in (use to love clubbing) had no way of saving. I was lucky to get my first company car at 21 renault 5 turbo, so always drove decent cars, if not very exciting. Still did not save, i am one of those people that always lives right up to their means and has to have what i want NOW.

Unfortunatly in my 30s got divorced and got stuck with £25k worth of his debts, nearly went bankcrupt I did three jobs to get through it. At the end of the day if you take finance then do it, but make sure you can pay it or your prepared to work your backside off to get out of it, if things go wrong, sometimes things leap on you that are out of your control.

Once the debts where gone I carried on working 7 days a week, up until a few years ago, now everything has changed, earnt good bonuses, hard work paid off with a good job and invested wisely and now have the pleasure of walking in and doing things like paying cash for my M. Nows its cash for everything, but would still take fianance if there was something i needed it for. I think if you have the desire to suceed or make money you will find a way out of problems, or ways to save, Z4 drivers do seem to have a drive and a certain zest for life, drive a z4 and nothing is impossible :D

I would not change anything, on how i bought cars previously or change the finance i took out. I am still a live for the moment person, but I dont have kids or any other responsibilities as such. Everyones different, but my advice would be go for what your want, how you want, whatever your age, life is too short. Just wish i was twenty, not 40 and driving a Z4

i was sensible all my life, i feel it got me know where, the ex left me hehe, so now that i have paid of the mortgage i decided to keep up the mortgage payment but on a car instaed of another house, i will run my car for a couple of years then be sensible and boring again hehe

my car was 26500, cheap i thought, it was brand new and highly spec'd, because the new shape Z4 had been lauched mine was heavily discounted, the same car 12 months previously would have been 35K, or may be that was just a good sales line, well i fell for it lol

I financed the 10,142.32 GBP or $16500 it took to buy the car. I went to a regular bank rather than a credit union and even got lower interest rate! :D I work at Geek Squad doing installations, so it pays well haha!

Im living at home now with my parents while I finish my finance degree at OU. I see no reason to spend about seven grand a semester to live on campus when I live like 30 minutes away from school!
