Required in some Zeds, 5 series and X series when installing Intravee with Alpine or other iPod interfaces.

Depends on CD changer wiring present...

(3 pin male, 6 pin male) - You do not need the additional DSP adapter.
(3 pin male, round coaxial cable) - You need the additional DSP adapter.
(3 pin male, 6 pin male, round coaxial cable) - You probably don't need the additional DSP adapter but you can't be sure until you install.

I bought the adapter before my install as a precaution as I did not want to end up with a half finished job on the day. Turns out I didn't need it so I have a DICE DSP adapter you can buy if you like!

Price to Forum members is £35 posted (These are £67 on Ebay).

You don't need dsp adapter for z4 if you have intravee.

Well that is just stating the blooming obvious Marius. If your car already has an Intravee installed and working then of course you don't need an adapter!

The adapter is sometimes required when installing the Alpine and Intravee solution in cars that had the DSP upgrade option from new. If the only working audio feed available under your boot carpet is digital co-ax then you will need this adapter for an Intravee installation.

If you don't have the co-ax then you don't have DSP. The standard wiring only supports analogue. Some cars are wired for both but some aren't.

Wrong I'm afraid. I have the top end DSP system and I fitted an Intravee. The changer had the same plugs my old Alpina had with the basic setup.

No need to be afraid but if there is no digital co-ax lead connected to your amp then how can you possibly have any digital signal processing? An Indy specialist told me that the wiring present depended on the factory build spec and the reason my car was wired for both is because it came out of the factory with TV aswell as the DSP upgrade which meant there was a requirement for both digital and analogue audio signals. He reckoned that by installing my ipod using the Alpine and Intravee connected into the analogue wiring I was effectively downgrading my sound quality from digital to analogue.

I did it anyway of course and haven't noticed any real difference.

If you are sure that all UK Z4s were pre-wired the same way then I may have better luck selling this on Ebay as there are threads on other BMW forums from owners who have had to use these adapters in X3/X5/7 series models when installing audio kit.

Digital over copper is one possibility, as is analogue or digital over copper to the head unit and the head unit is wired to the amp.

It may be a year of build thing (my car is an 06 model). My 52 plate Cooper S had a coaxial connection from it's changer but no DSP.

Analogue audio needs a dedicated wire for each channel so analogue down a single wire copper or otherwise would be mono only!

My point was more that digital can be transmitted over copper, it doesn't have to be co-axial.

It's a shame spaghetticoder has shut down, it might answer the question. I suspect the DSP is done in the amplifier, but whether that's fed digital or analogue from the head unit and changer I don't know. It would make sense from a parts perpective for there to be one CD Changer and one of each head unit type. Again, I don't know if the head units have both analogue and digital outputs.

Pre facelifts with DSP need the adapter, face lifts models are all fine.
