Diagnostics/Coding

My Z4 had/has an alarm issue whereby the alarm will go off for no good reason. All the usual suspects checked etc. I dithered over the BMTechnics solution which wouldn't run on my wife's laptop. I eventually decided it wasn't too much hassle lugging my desktop down to the garage so went to order a BMTechnics cable only to find they'd been yanked by BMW the week before I went to buy.

I soldiered on locking the car with the key (how 1970's) & putting up with increasingly erratic parking sensors. I found BM Cables which looked promising although they make no mention of minimum pc specs. However, a bit of googling put a shadow over the quality of BM Cables cable & software.

I have now found www.cable-shack.co.uk which seems a better choice (at least they aren't being slagged off everywhere).

Whilest Coding is a nice idea I'm currently interested in sorting out my alarm & parking sensor problems.

Any current recommendations?

That's the most usual suspect so tried that first. Not that.

When I bought the car the p.o. said it had a dodgy tilt sensor & he had already got hold of a replacement to fit. It's a right chow on to get to though so I want to be sure that's what the problem is before I take the car apart.

Boot? Had the same problem on my E46, turned out to be the boot latch in the end. PITA to find though as you say.

Funnily enough, when I had it serviced the guy cleared all the fault codes & said there had been a boot lock code there. What did you do to fix your problem?

If it's tilt sensor you can switch it off in SSS software
That was my thinking for the diagnostics/coding cable & software. You've just answered my next question which would have been 'Which software package?'

First of all I need to get a cable & software. Nobody's commented on this Cable-Shack product :?

DIS will tell you what part is creating a fault code, SSS can switch off Tilt sensor,

Cable shack (Jimmy) is a great fella..

Offers back up and tech advice if you buy off him..

So it is! Only about 40 miles from me then.

I've got myself a Cable-Shack cable. Spent ages installing the software so didn't get more than a quick look on DIS.

It's reporting 14 bonnet sensor faults, 4 door faults & a rather staggering 35 faults with the boot catch. Only a couple with the tilt sensor ? :erm:

Looking forward to some quality time diagnosing (& hopefully fixing) all the faults - at least once I've figured DIS out.

Hey does any software come with the cables from cable-shack or do you need to get the software else where?

No it comes with a whole suite of programs (which you can find on the net anyway). Installation is easy if a bit lengthy. It seems to work well so far.

My tilt sensor is reported to be faulty. More testing required :)

thanks for that. Had the abs and traction control warning lights come on this morning. They went off again but might need to buy one of these if I get any more issues

The traction control uses the abs sensors in reverse if that makes sense. Check the trigger splines for rust - that can confuse the sensor.

If they're anything like the ones on my E36 be prepared for a right battle to get them out.

Hey how did you get on with the cable-shack cable/software?
My abs light came on again this morning so think i will have to have a look at getting one of these cables so i can work out which sensor is playing up.

Cheers

The DIS program is a little clunky due to working on VM but it did the job. However, I decided to wipe the slate with 'Quick Delete' to see what was still an issue. Now it won't autodetect the car. Selecting manually doesn't seem to bring anything up. My fault for trying to be clever/lazy.

The reversing sensors are a constant PIA now but DIS doesn't seem to be able to diagnose which one is faulty or if it's the control unit.

I haven't been able to get SSS Progman to work yet.

Need to perservere & check out some of the coding forums.
