The small handheld scanners can't code modules to the car, you need BMW INPA and NCS Expert to do that on a Laptop. You can buy the software as a package together with the interface to plug into the car.

Setting up on a laptop can be a bit of a faff but as long as you get the settings correct it works fine. For a Z4 it plugs into the 16pin OBD2 socket, for Z3 models it needs an extra 20pin to 16pin cable changer to plug into the round 20pin diagnostic socket in the engine bay.

I've been using an BAFX Products bluetooth obd2 reader, it simply plugs into your obd2 reader in your car, you download a obd2 reading app on your phone and away you go. I've used it a few times on cars owned by family i.e bmw e90, e46, z3 and even a honda s2000 and it seems to read the codes very accurately. It seems to be pretty user friendly, which is a huge plus for my remedial skills. I remember watching a youtube video of the guy recommending this device, before I purchased mine, very helpful. By the way, the app I downloaded was called Torque(lite). Hope it helps.

Looks like another option. But will the app clear/change codes? For example, can you register a new battery? It seems I will be going down that road soon.

To be honest guys, I use it mainly as a guide, if its a simple fix, I'll do it myself, if its more complex, I leave it to the mechanics to diagnose using trade software and tools. Thus far, I've only used it less than a handful of times, mainly to clear codes and a few other remedial tasks. There are more comprehensive guides and instructions online should you wish to investigate further to fully utilise this tool.

Thanks Colb. I looked at the scanner you recommended and in the FAQ found this:


So, at least somebody believes that it can be done. I also checked the other scanner I was looking at and that one clearly says it cannot do it, so I decided that, this tool being US$56, it would be about the same price that BMW Colombia will charge me just to put their scanner on, without doing anything else. So I ordered it and I will try to correct the transport mode problem.
As I said in the other topic, I found a download of DISv57, but as you say it is quite something to install. However, it will certainly be cheaper than taking it to the shop, and in the video that you linked to, the procedure seems quite easy. As a matter of fact, it looks like installing DIS will be harder than the the actual process of resetting Transport Mode. But that will be sometime in the future, as I will need to buy the cable. After a bit more research, it is also available in Amazon for like $32. I have to go to the USA in January so I will order it there, if the C310 will not do the trick.

Well looks like the Creator 310+ will do it, can't remember seeing it in the options on mine but most probably capable of doing it if it says it can. The 310+ is well worth getting for access to all the other modules on the car far more portable than the laptop systems. As you say you would recoup the cost of the scanner first time you use it rather than pay a garage to do it.

I went on line and they have UPDATES for the software. If you have not updated yours, and it was a while back, maybe it is time to do and check the new software.
