Diagnostic guess please - Round Two

Ok so following the other thread here is the other issue I have which is more of a concern to me.

Auto gearbox earlier just cruising along a road / car park thing at like 20, lifted off so the car started to slow down via engine breaking however I could then Rev the throttle freely while it was in drive still and I revved a couple of times to like 2-3k. I then rolled backwards slightly when stopped before the gear appeared to reengage itself.

Surely I shouldn't be able to do that ?!

Have noticed it once or twice before but thought I was imagining things. This time I definitely caught it and will calling bmw in the morning.

No it's not normal, but these gearboxes do need fluid changes despite being considered "sealed for life".

Calling BMW will not really help as they do not recognise the need to service the gearbox, so will in all likelihood throw all sorts of other possibilities at you, when in 99% of cases a good fluid and filter change will solve most issues relating to sticky gear changes.

Not saying this is definitely the cause, but a good fluid change will set you back £150 all in and is good preventive maintenance anyway.

If I were you, I would go to a good independent specialist who can do fluid changes and ask them to give your car the once over.

@Stratts: Thanks for the reply, would there be a point in taking it into BMW if it is still under AUC warranty? Or would they not do much.

I expect the car may be going in anyway as my first diagnostic thread is pointing at a sticky caliper (not confirmed) which I will also get them to fix if I can get near enough to knowing that is the issue.

Sorry, if you still have warranty then yes of course you should take it in to BMW.

Booked in for 16th Dec.

BMW said it may just need an oil topup, but will investigate either way.

Sounds terrible fella but I hope the solution is simple with costing the earth.

Never had that in any of the auto boxes I have had. I assume no warning lights came on?

No warning lights have been on, and after the incident the car drove perfectly fine for the next 50 miles home... very random occurance every now and then, usually when cold.

I am expecting any costs to be absorbed under AUC warranty, maybe not oil, but we'll see.

didnt wheeler dealers fix a boxter S with a dicky auto box by doing exactly the same thing. just a oil/filter change.

Good point PVR.

I will wait and see what BMW come out with from their investigation and report back, I am still half doubting myself imagining the issue as it is quite rare and therefore am having the debate of how far to push their investigation before it turns into a hefty non-warranty investigation bill for myself.
