Diagnostic error code: 2A98 Crankshaft - Inlet Camshaft, Reference

I am a newbie to all of this, I have a 2006 2.5L with 75K on the clock, been in my possession for a year, but with very low mileage in that time. The engine warning light came on accompanied by very rough running, and using the ThinkDiag unit, presented the following error 2A98 DME: Crankshaft - Inlet Camshaft, Reference.

It has been suggested that this is either Vanos or Timing Chain related, with the view being that the timing chain may have skipped a tooth and may need to be replaced. I have had a quote for £2,000 for the timing chain, which makes it economically questionable.

Any thoughts on how I can verify exactly what the issue is? If it is the timing chain, what is a realistic cost to replace.

many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
I'm fairly confident that someone on here will be able to help you with this.
Hopefully a sensor issue rather than the timing chain I'd like to hope.
Just to confirm, is this the facelift with the N52 engine?

I would think it unlikely that the timing chain would skip a tooth. I'd first try the VANOS solenoids.
My car had codes MSV70: 2A99 2CFA 2D09 2A98 and new solenoids cured it.
You can try cleaning them first and swapping them round - if the error then becomes "Crankshaft - Exhaust Camshaft, Reference" then you know which is the duff solenoid.

The Engine code from manufacturers plate under the bonnet states Z4 2.5i N52B25A registered on 03/2006 so I believe so.

Indeed it is. I couldn't remember when the changeover was, sorry.
I'd suggest trying what Zulu4 says with the solenoids first.
Assuming you do this kind of stuff yourself?
If not, and you don't fancy it, maybe give your general area and maybe someone on here could lend a hand?
