Diabetes

I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago and I can not get it under control. I feel quite depressed about it really and yet I struggle to take responsibility for it. I was on a weekly GLP1 injection, but that did not seem to help and I continued to put weight on.

I do not find the diabetes clinic very inspiring and I really dislike going there for a number of reasons. All in all I feel pretty s**t about having diabetes.

I am looking to buy an exercise bike and give that a try. IF it was easy loosing weight, we would all be skinny, right?

I fear insulin is my answer

Don't give up the fight!

I was diagnosed type 2 in 1989. I started on diet control then tablets and then insulin. I increased to 160 units per day. I had a gastric bypass operation five years ago. Lost nearly 10 stone. I am now not on insulin, only one tablet per day and now have blood pressure of a 16 year old as opposed to regular tablets to treat high blood pressure. Also I had a mask on whilst sleeping to help sleep apnoea which I no longer suffer with.
Life changing!

My little bruv had the same issues as you Roy He had the same operation. He was looking at an early death at 40 years old but thanks to the wonderful NHS and all who sail in her. He has a new life! I told him not to F**k it up this time! (As only a big bruv can say to a liitle bruv). Good to hear, best of luck!

Diagnosed Type 1 in April - just before my 30th birthday.

Minimum 4 insulin injections daily. All good so far....

Seems like we're all falling apart at the seams!

You are not kidding, some more than others

I am looking to buy an upper body exercise machine, either by Scifit or Technogym. Got to get the old heart racing somehow as the cost of going round Knockhill costs too much!

Any opinions on the exercise machines gratefully received.

Ive been a Type 2 for the last 1.5 years (Was 36 at the time)... but its been in the family for years. Especially being from parents of both Afro-Caribbean, it was always a high chance of me getting diagnosed too.

I've had to change a few things in my life, but too be honest I enjoy it. I do more exercise now and just stay on top of it. My wife embraces it too. Although she is not diabetic. She drinks suger-free stuff, low salt etc.

But occasionally we still like our pick and mix!! :D

I know someone whos son was diagnosed at 11 for type 1. got to admire him, as he is now at uni and managing well.

I think there are an awful lot of people who are type 2 without knowing. I found out during an operation for a non related condition. When diagnosed and subsequently controlled, I felt so much better not realising how I really felt before. ie. lethargic, thirsty etc.

Speaking to my practice nurse / diabetic guru, she tells me that there a people who knowingly have the condition (type 2), yet choose to ignore it completely.

Yes, I have also experienced this. Some also 'cheat' when others are not looking. Sad thing is, they are not only cheating themselves but people who are caring for them.

Sadly, I think I almost fall into this category. I am aware of the short comings and yet I struggle to do the right thing. I know what to do, less in and more out. My bloods are running at twice what they should be (ie 16) for most of the time. Has anyone gone onto a diet that has no or little carbs?

There are some hidden sugars such as in fruit juice etc. Fructose (fruit sugar) is the same as glucose with regards to diabetes. If you don't eat the fruit as well as drinking it such as freshly squeezed, the fibre does not get ingested so the sugar goes almost directly into the blood. Lots of fat free products contain huge amounts of sugar. I'm afraid you think you are eating healthily but are not.
I am sounding like a mother-in-law but good luck.

I cheat sometimes - I even told the nurse this and she gave a nod of approval - She said that she shouldn't really but !!!!

If I have a little cheat /treat - I make sure that i don't do it the next day

With diet and medication i got my Hba1c (can't get my head around mmols) down to 6.1 Last check they were 5.9 - Too low they said and reduced medication - seems like you can't do right for doing wrong.

I tend to watch carbs - also look very carefully at any processed foods - and cereals ! They look like the healthy option but can be loaded with sugars.

Keep up the fight.

I carb count and match insulin doses to what I'm eating.

My first hba1c at diagnosis was 14 or something. Then after 4 weeks I had it down to 9.

Hoping for a 6/7 at my November check.

I reckon type 1 is possibly easier to manage than type 2. I can eat whatever I like (within reason) and not worry about 'being naughty'.

It's all good

My Hba1c at diagnosis started at 18 and with a huge diet and lifestyle change I got it down to 9
With the addition of meds I think it's in control.
Now they are piddling about with the meds as 5.9 was considered low.

Ordering an upper body exercise machine from Scifit. Hopefully that will burn away the excess sugars.

Thanks for your support lads. I am finding this tough.

Try to live like a saint thro the week then treat yourself a bit at the weekend!
If you don't put as many excess sugars into the system, the amount of excercise will have a bigger effect!
