Never spent time properly cleaning cars before, but going to give it a go. Already have some autogleam roof stuff ready to go.

Heading to halfords in the morning - any beginners recommendations of what to buy and also any tips of how to do things well?

How many buckets, what shampoo/sponges, clay bar (do halfords even sell these?!?), what polish etc?

Thanks as always, Stu

My own take is to keep it simple to start / Autoglym Shampoo , Autoglym Super Resin Polish ( which will clean your paintwork) then Autoglym High Gloss Protection to finish .
Halfords were doing these for £10 a few weeks back but offer over i think ? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autoglym-VP3SB-Car-Care-Kit/dp/B00EZI3AHI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1397849095&sr=8-4&keywords=autoglym+kit

A coat of Poorboys Silver Glaze after the Resin Polish would help fill any swirls & light scratches

Meglars also do a similar 3 step procedure but a little more expensive & the polish part is hard on & even harder off

Halfords do sell clay bars, and they work fine.

Once you've done the polythene bag test before and after a claying you'll have a very different view on what a clean car is.

Thanks all, and thanks for the link Dav, very helpful, and I'll try and use the search function next time...

I paid a chap 95 to fully detail the exterior which to be fair it was awesome. However, I paid 120 English sheets at halfords with the 3 for 2 offer and got about £150 worth of kit. Spent 4.5 hours doing the exterior the other day, and whilst it took a while I was chuffed with the results.
