Detailed performance stats?

You all need my in car speed sensor...

Country lane approaching the speed limit and the fun factor it chimes 'Slow down...'

Motorway approaching naughty speed same again...

Around town 25 mph and again slow down...

Mrs Gannet it seems has two favourite words

306 diesel as quick as 3.0 z4 from 30-80mph???

I am assuming this must be using a single gear only? 4th???

The z4 would accelerate from 30 in 2nd, leave the 306 then up shift to 3rd about ?63mph then onto 80mph. No way could a diesel 306 match it.

My previous car (vx220) felt like you were doing 100mph at 50 mph so it felt a lot quicker than the z4 does, allbeit if anything the z4 3.0 is quicker than the 2.2 vx220. But its so much comfier it hides the speed.

Yeah, Z4 in 3rd, 306 in 4th, the 306 was about 0.5-1s behind give or take from 40mph to 80mph...

Not a fair test on either really, but it plays into the hands of the short-geared, low-weight, moderate power diesel delivery of my last car.

Yeah, the VX220 etc will feel much faster than a Z4 does, but at the same time a Z4 feels much faster than a normal car does. It at least demands more attention to go quickly on the more fun roads anyway. My 306 would go from 40mph > 80mph in not very long, in 4th, with not much noise, and not much effort, down a back road into work. The Z4 down that same road is harder to go fast, and infact on the Bridgestone RFT's felt about fast enough at 50mph it was so lively, the FK452 let me get 65mph and it feels plenty.

All said and done, the 306 was quick enough, too fast for me really because it did it without any effort, much like an Evo does. The Z4 was a great compromise for a normal practical daily car for all-year round, while also being fun and ultimately as fast, but alot more work/involving/fun to go that fast = bonus all round :)

It's this feeling that makes me think that the new Zed (after avery brief drive on Saturday) though not being as focused as our cars will make it faster down a given road for most people

Yep, faster for sure I'd say.

And that is exactly why I wouldn't want one. Going faster more easily is a bad thing for a sports car to do imho, especially one that isn't exactly really hard to drive quickly already.

Where does it end, well, probably through a wall as you drive faster, trying to find the fun/interactivity lost by making it too easy to go quickly, or sold on, because you don't stack it, but get bored instead. OR, you keep it, because you don't actually want a sports car at all, and are happy to be bored and go fast.

Mine takes off at around 80 i get a second surge of power which is a pain most of the time as i have to lift off or risk loosing my license and had no problems hitting 140 on an uphill run did start to take a little more time when getting near 140 but was a long uphill climb and as for top down hit 136 very easily when in France with bags more left

One good point i like about the z4 is that it is soooooo easy to drive, coming from the vx220 where you constantly need to evaluate the road conditions, moderate the accelerator from corners, feeling the back end twitch etc etc, if your pusing the vx then you always think you may actually die any second, esp if the road is even the slightest bit damp lol. In the z4 doing the same route now i can just drive without any skill and a yellow light may flash now and again where i possibly would be in a hedge with the vx!

Obviously a skilled driver could push the vx harder without entering the hedge, but unfortunally i dont fit that catagory :-)

All this talk has reminded me that i havent actually been over 80mph in the z4 yet, so need to find out what top end is like :-) may take it on my private runway tommorow..

I think the Z4 is a good blend/compromise from a fast comfy coupe and a proper sports car ala VX220 or what have you.

I considered an Alpina B3 3.3 or 330Ci, and the VX220's a fair bit, but in the end the Z4 seemed to be the best of all worlds. I'm actually glad now I didn't bother with a VX220 T as I know I'd have found it too hardcore through this last winter! Ice in the foot wells and crappy heaters, eeek :D
