Depreciation free motoring...what's your picks?

Always interesting to get a temperature check on the market at different points. If we factor that depreciation is the single biggest cost in running a car, then which carts at different price points represent the best buys to NOT lose you bundles over the next 3 years of ownership? Which cars have reached the bottom of their curve? Only rules are it's got to be relatively new, can be used daily, fun and interesting to look at...my picks are:

£3k Z4 3.0si
£5k 2005 987 Boxster
£10k Z4MR
£15k Z4MC
£20k 997
£25k 981 Boxster S
£30-35k Nissan GTR R35
£35-40k 981 GTS
£40-50k 991 C4S
£50-60k Mercedes GTS
£60-80k Audi R8 V10+
£80-100k Mclaren 570s

£3k MG BGT
£5k Mercedes W124
£10k Renault Alpine GTA
£15k Lotus Elise S1
£20 Porsche 997.2
£25 Subaru Impreza P1
£30- £35 Audi UR Quattro
£35 -£40 Noble M12
£40 -£45 Escort Cosworth

I think anything above this price is set to depreciate unless you go for a classic

I'd agree with the 3 Z4 models on the list and Mister T's Lotus Elise, but don't know too much about the other options - apart from Classics which a Mercedes W124, Renault Alpine GTA, Audi UR Quattro and Escort Cosworth surely are these days! And if you include Classics any Fast Ford has to be a safe bet as does a Lancia Integrale, so long as you can stop the rust.

Maybe add any E46 M3 CS or CSL to the list.

5 years ago I would have added £10K E86 3.0Si (worked for me for 2 years and 8K miles) and they were still doing OK until the last few months, when prices seem to have suffered a huge dip. :(

But that usually happens to cars I own - I sold a 1978 MK2 Escort RS2000 in 1984 for about £2,500 and a 1992 Capri 2.8 Injection in 1985 for £4K.

At the end of the day I have to enjoy any car I own - if it avoids depreciation that's just a bonus.

Are these projected losses?

You can already buy 997’s for under £20k, would say £15k in 3 years

A decent E46 M3 is still a shrewd investment

My Scooby Forester SG5 Turbo, it was a nice one and only cost me £3.5. After 2 years ownership the phone didn't stop ringing when I sold it for the same money, great cars and there is a big following for a clean Scooby.

...... but they like to drink a bit!

All nice choices, although you'll struggle to find a 981 Boxster S for £25k. I've been keeping a close eye on that market for the past 12 months and the only S models that pop up for around £25k are either Cat C/D/S or have 70k+ miles.

997.2 for 20k? .. Add 10k for a ropey / leggy one.

Think you would be pretty safe with this.

How much!

I sold a red one in 1985 for £2,500!

But I'm not so sure it qualifies as relatively new, and I doubt it would be much fun as a daily driver nowadays.

Yeah I’d agree with that. The one car I look at and feel it’s cracking value is a manual V10 R8...at £50k that feels like such an under appreciated car given what manual Ferrari’s are going for.

Yes, when you can buy a manual V10 R8 for £50K it does make me wonder why you would spend £40K on any MK2 Escort! :o

I bought my Nissan GTR R35 (2010) for £42k in 2014.

Sold it 2 years later (but on a Litchfield Stage 1) for £42k.

Bought my Mazda Mx5 mk1 in 2016 for £1250.
Sold the following year for £3250.

Well it may not be impossible if you don't mind some miles - this one sold recently for less than £4K:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=117766
