Update this morning - wife went in for her " emergency " appointment this morning - turns out there wasn't an infection after all but a previous filling had left a gap that was causing a problem ( filling done by previous now retired dentist ! ) /she had her jaw Xrayed again to ensure it was completely free of infection and assured that everything looked okay to continue with the root canal filling in a couple of weeks time - also advised to use a certain type of toothpaste . Fee for this appointment including assessment and Xray - nothing 
Will be going down the " private " route for the root canal - after today our faith in the new dentist is restored !
