Denied boarding on a flight...

In fact a quick Google reveals that the Passport Office recommends a minimum of three months validity on your passport for an EU journey and six months for everywhere else...IIRC the circumstances that would explain, and in their minds probably justify, Sleazyjets view at the time they refused boarding.
 
Following this with interest and empathise with this situation having a still valid passport
I travel Europe far too much on business, so am all too familiar with the vagaries of borders regardless of the rules, so do understand airlines attitude.

All I can say is even if you get on a flight using an id card try clearing border control when you land somewhere. I've tried it :(

I wasn't even able to check into hotels in Italy 2 weeks ago without my passport...no passport no room - simples.
Fill my hire car in Spain a month ago. Passport or no payee with card .. And so it goes :(

Anyway - hope you get a result against sleazy jet as I hate them and most budget airlines.
 
It is a bit of a contradiction really isn't it. The theory is freedom of movement within the EU, but how can you enjoy that without providing unequivocal, easily identifiable evidence of your nationality....for which a passport is really the only commonly recognisable document....

I mean how many UK coppers honestly know how to identify a genuine Latvian driving licence......so in the absence of a proper passport, yer average Latvian stands a good chance of being arrested on some trumped up charge like "being swarthy in a public place" or "excessive hirsutness".... :o

Hirsutism or frazonism[1] is the excessive hairiness[2] on women[3] in those parts of the body where terminal hair does not normally occur or is minimal

Update: SleazyJet has just confirmed in writing there is no date restrictions on Polish Passports.

They have also just come up with a new story of 'I have received an information that the person at the airport was checking the details about the law from the Portuguese authority website. The rules listed there were not updated on that day, therefore you were given the incorrect information.

The airport staff made the decision on the basis of the information given by the website. Of course, it was reported and now the error from the Portuguese Home Affairs website has been removed.'

Offer on the table is money back just for the 'unused booking'... what do you think I ought to do? Am thinking of saying my contract was with the airline, so they can compensate me & they can claim off the Portugese authorities...

So lacroupade, where's your money ... or like to go 'each way'?

Jembo, the airline made the decision. Irrespective of getting information off a 3rd party web site, they have a duty of care. You need to read the very small print in your contract with them to see if they have a " get out clause" in this situation.

One of the first things I did. Allows them to refuse boarding where 'such action is necessary in order to comply with any applicable laws, regulations or orders of any state or country to be flown from, into or over including laws or regulations relating to Advanced Passenger Information requirements' where the key word is comply.

Today was the first time EJ are claiming they referred the matter and were acting on this information, yet at the gate I was told over the phone they had their own guidelines & was not possible to refer to the Portugese authorities... lets see what evidence they have they did this.

LOL well done for persistence, but my money is still on Sleazy ... they can clearly now say that they did their best but were given duff info. And they will have covered their arses against consequential loss in Ts and Cs so a refund and maybe something towards another flight is the best I'm betting on :thumbsup: It still hinges on the fact that airlines have very little responsibility when it comes to breach of contract, otherwise they'd have been sued out of business years ago! But keep on, its cheering me up!
 
If you were feeling particularly pissy about it, you could always go back to the Portugese people and ask them to confirm Easyjet's story... :poke:

At the end of the day you'll probably never get more than a few hundred quid off of them.

So it all depends in how much inconvenience you want to cause them.

Personally I think their website tale is BS so id be asking for the web address of the page. Then contact the web master and find out if it was revised.

Or just push for a little compensation on top of your refund and leave it at that.
 
For those still following this, who wants to bet their V5 pink slip against mine after what we received on our email last Friday from squeeze's senior resolution team?

After weeks n weeks of investigation their opening settlement offer almost covers a weekend away with flights & accommodation in similar standard hotel for two... about 75% of the way there of what I think is fair.

So fellow Zeddites, any takers?
 
Clearly they realise they are in the kack. If you don't think their offer is adequate compensation, don't take it!
 
I don't suppose you would consider asking for a weekend break for all Z4 Forum members that have been following this thread so that we can all enjoy the outcome and celebrate victory with you.

Respond with this plus refund of the original flights. Plus any incidental costs (airport parking etc) plus 4 days worth of holiday money based on your joint current salaries as you will now have to use additional holiday that you didn't before.

That's a crazy story. I'm of Polish nationality and I don't even have a passport, let alone carry it. Whenever flying to Lisbon or Nice on holidays, I just take my ID. Never seen anybody question in. Not since 2004.
 
... have now decided to take Squeezy's offer made in their most recent email.

Maybe not everything I might want, but sticking it out for ages in your trench isn't going to let you enjoy the end of the war early...

Time to move on, as will just about cover a weekend in Rome next year at the Hotel Columbus off St Peters Sq... Happy Days as will be something really nice to look forward to...
