Delaminated Front Screen Bond

Hello everyone,

A query for your educated minds and views please.

I'm sure I read something the other month about E89 front windscreens being discontinued or unavailable? (Maybe that was the OEM part.) From memory it also seemed that aftermarket screens were not as good or came with issues.

I have just found slight delamination on my front windscreen (pic attached - can’t send to upload a video). Not sure how long it's been like this - not noticed any water ingress in the short time I've owned the vehicle. (I also thinks it’s more prevalent given the sun beating down on it today!)

Anyway, I believe it's just a case of getting it taken out and re-bonded (in the first instance).

At the same time, whilst the vehicle passed its recent MOT - it did (now) comes with an advisory for a small 3mm('ish) chip - "Central Upper Windscreen damaged but not adversely affecting drivers view Chip within swept area".

My immediate question on the back of all this is therefore:

- Should I keep the existing front screen and get it re-bonded given it currently fits (I think) and might be considered OK (It's currently a BMW "Guardian" screen). I would then repair the chip myself to save me not having to declare a claim on the insurance. [Was going to try a "Rain-X" product repair.]; or

- Go through the insurance to try and get a completely new screen?

Would insurance replace it under windscreen cover given its just a repairable chip (not a crack) or would they leave me to fix the bonding myself?

Is it also advisable to rebond a previously bonded screen?

Thanks all and appreciate your views.

A recent discussion on the Zedshed Cymru whatsapp chat was that going through your insurer shouldn't affect your no-claims or premiums. (Admittedly for non Zed cars)- I've previously just gone direct to the repairer eg Autoglass, and they have contacted the insurer registered to the car and I've just paid the excess without even contacting the insurer. approx £30 for a repair - £125 for a windscreen replacement which was for a Ford heated windscreen. Sorry, I don't have any knowledge on the specific E89 windscreen situation - Mine is the E85
