Definitive speaker swap info

All,

I done the searches and read numerous feeds in this subject but I still cant see an easy / clear way forward.

I currently have the six speaker system - what make / model / size of replacement speaker is the most easiest direct swap.

I've visited several audio shops as well and they have all come back with rubbish answers.

I also had the 6 speaker setup.
I replaced the footwell speakers with these http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-in-phase-xtw6_p-24087.htm
I had to make an adapter plate out of MDF for the left one but it's no big deal.

I also added 2 of these to the doors and also replaced the rears with these http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-in-phase-xtc42_p-19733.htm

The result is pretty good, not mind blowing but for the money I'm very pleased with the result and don't regret it.

I upgraded my front speaker's to SPL Dynamics SD-6.2's, powered off a JBl GTO 75.2. I fully sound deadened in and around the footwell speaker locations, and as has been mentioned, mounted the new speakers on some 15mm (i think, cant quite remember) MDF baffles.

Everything still looks completely stock, but it sounds very good! The SPL's I used are known for being very warm sounding with massive amounts of bass for a 6.5" speaker, which is just what I wanted.

Some audio shops dont know anything, i went to one place that told me it wasnt possible to upgrade the speakers in a Z4 even after me telling my i had the standard 6 speaker system.

I had JL TR650-CSi's in the footwell, their quite slim so i didnt need mdf rings, instead of putting the tweeters in the wingmirrors and going for a 3 way speaker i put the JL tweeters in the door keeping the seperation from the mid down. I really dont think its worth replacing the rears, i ran the stock rears at a 70-80% front fade.

This depends largely on resources and what you wish the end result to be.

Speakers will not be getting much power from the HU I think it's about 25w x4 @ 4ohm on the stock HU. so it's pointless spending loads of money on expensive speakers since they'll be grossly under powered without an amp.

Use this to replace the mids in the rear and the tweets (ditch that lame crossover)
VIBE LITEAIR 4
They are very light and very shallow so no mounting challenges.

For the Footwell you'll also need components with the best frequency range
Pioneer TS-G171C 17cm components
The frequency range of these start at 35hz (which is very good) and only require ~35w, you should have no probs running these from the front with the tweets from either this unit or the above ones.

There you go, upgrade for £100; use the existing wires, simply replace the components, boom better sound.

OR!!

Buy another set of z4 mids from ebay or a member who's upgraded and wire them into the door. the sound would only be a little better, but you'd have only spent about £20.

Hi th30dor3, sorry to be a pain! Have got the speakers as per your thread and planning to fit at the weekend. Did you fit speakers to the doors when doing your mod? I've got the 6 speaker set up I don't have any in the doors. If you did put any in the doors is there an issue with the impedance running through the OEM head unit? Cheers Phil

Sent you a pm dude, but in a nutshell splicing into the door is a tidy cheap upgrade to your sound, it's very easy.

Just incase anyone is interested, I'll have a set of the vibe lite air 4 and the 6.5 with tweets and a 3way crossover going on the weekend. Nice little upgrade there, due to their slimmer nature they can go anywhere.
