I just bought a second hand z4. Sent z4 to BMW Dealer for maintenance check. No serious problems with the rims and tyres .After a month of driving the z4, i noticed defects as shown in the pictures above.

Can you tell me if these defects are something serious?

Should i change the tyre since there are cuts on the rubber of the tyre?

Should i change the rims because i think the defects (chip) could propagates and weaken the rim alloy structure.

Hi,

I'm no expert, but to me it just looks like kerbing, where the wheel has grazed the kerb.

It doesnt look like a fault of the alloy, more driver. Its very easy to do, any touch of the kerb, and you will get damage to the rim.

The tyre issues also relate to the same ting, as when you graze the kerb the tyre sidewall takes some of the impact. In your case it looks like your tyres have rim protectors, which in somecase absorb the impact. However, it does look like you have some damage to your tyres, from the pics I cant tell whether its serious or not, so might be worth calling into a dealer or tyre specialist to check if you are not sure.

Hope this helps

Looks like someone has curbed that Zed pretty hard. I would get a new set of wheels and tires. But that’s just me, if the looks don’t bother you I don’t think, from looking at the photos, that there is any serious damage, just cosmetic problems. And yes welcome to the forum. :)

Yep the tyre damage doesn't look mega-serious. Have you got any bigger pics of the car, be interesting to see it with those rims on :)

Actually this is one where for the sake of safety I partially disagree with my fellow posters above on one aspect. For sure this is just driver error and kerbing, of that I have no doubt.

In terms of damage it's impossible to tell if it's serious or not. When a tyre is kerbed it can so easily break nylon reinforcing cords inside. They are completely invisible form outside until at speed or stress the tyre simply fails. I know this from personal experience where a trailer clipped a corner at slow speed. No visible damage until 100mile down the motorway it began to distort. By the time it was home it looked like a baloon on the side.

The rims themselves will be fine - they can take a good beating.

Take it to a decent tyre shop for advice.

What cj10jeeper said. Wheels are fine, tires, you should check. It's easy to "rash" those wheels. My 325 taught me to park like an old lady!!

It's only those 4 little black bits (or two if you are driving it a bit faster) between you and the nearest hedge. If there is any doubt with tyres, then there is no doubt - get it checked.
