Deep clean... Finished :-)

Seeing as I have some time on my hands I promised myself I would try and clean the Z properly - even if I only do it once. So I have been pestering people on here and buying 'product' over the last few weeks in anticipation. Today I bit the bullet and went for it... Well, partially anyway as I ran out of time

However, here's the progress so far...

The plan was to clean my 108s (again... they've been treated twice over winter just because I love them), do the engine bay while they drip dried, then swap my winters off one at a time, giving the arches a good seeing-to and fitting LED sidelights, finally. Then starting the car wash itself.

So, wheels treated with AG intensive tar remover (pretty crap - forgot to buy Tardis, needed a quick fix from Halfords :headbang: ), rinse, then Iron-X, rinse, then AG alloy wheel sealant (not bad, might wax them later but don't have wheel wax, only normal wax - will that work ?). Results :

There's a few dings appearing, so they will need refurbed next year. They still look booooootiful though 8)

On-plan, whilst they were drying I got stuck into the engine bay with Surfex HD and then 303 Aerospace Protectant. No before pics - it was pretty clean to start with as I usually give everything a guilty wipe down each wash. However, this is how it looks now :

And yes, I did clean up the protectant round the coolant cap, as well as give the front cover another wipe. In addition, my OCD got the better of me and I had to give the bonnet a clean too :

Nice. Took me almost 2 hours though :(

Decided to change the plan and clean the car itself rather than put nice clean shiny wheels on only to get them wet and dirty again. At this point I really went for it - wash (yes, two buckets  ), degreased with Surfex HD (not sure I should have done this, but I wanted all the wax and polish off), Rinse, Iron X all round, rinse, crap AG tar remover lathered on the lower levels, rinse then a final wash. Car now totally 'naked', as evidenced by the complete lack of beading :

It may just have been my imagination, but the paint felt almost sticky when I washed it the final time - I figured this was only natural on completely bare paintwork though.

Next I clayed the car - first time for me, not sure about the car, but it all went very well. I used a Megs quick clay kit, cheap and easy as I wanted to find out what all the fuss is about without breaking the bank. It was surprisingly easy, and actually the AG tar remover (plus Iron X) seemed to have done something as the clay lasted well, only really dirtying up round the sills which I did last. The paint is now smoother than it has ever been - feels lovely and even without any polish and wax it looks great :

Yes, that is my thumb

Unfortunately I can now see every single mar on the paintwork - tons of stone chips on the bonnet, some down the wings and rear quarters, scratches, swirls, you name it

This is where I ran out of time, so the car is now tucked up in the garage under some brand new dust sheets bought from B&Q this morning (Mrs B just rolled her eyes at me...). I know, not ideal, but the garage is dusty and as it will be pissing down all day tomorrow it is going to be hard to get it polished (Poorboys Black Hole, 2 coats) and waxed (Dodo Juice Purple Haze Pro, 2 coats). Really don't want to have to clean off loads of dust before starting to polish. Might do a Megs swirl remover polish before - but this is all by hand, so maybe not... I then still need to whip the winter wheels off, clean the arches and protect with 303, fit the LEDs and get the 108s back on. Can't even do the wheels in the garage as it is too small. So I may spend the day looking at houses with big double garages. Or painting skirting boards which is what I have been told I should be doing...

This is how she looks now :

To be continued... As long as my back holds out :P

Fantastic work Bing did you find it really satisfying I know I do the car will look great when you've finished:grin::grin: looking forward to the next installment

Si-forks is tapatalking

I expect it to be gleaming on the 28th then :poke:

108's still looking good. The easiest wheels ever to clean.

Looking good, shiiiiiiiiiny :) Some of your pics are showing as question marks too Bing, is it just me?!

Looking good,I've never done any of my previous cars with clay but i'm going to do my zed when the weather picks up

Looking good bing and your zed is putting mine to shame. Just waiting for some warmer weather to make an appearance in Scotland then the cleaning will begin. :)

As others have said what you have done so far is looking very good, top of my wish list would also be a double garage.
So much you could do if the weather is against you.

Loving the Part 1 write-up BIng. Looking forward to the next installment. You've done a great job so far. If I lived nearer to you I'd lend you my Megs G220. I keep offering it Darren but he's yet to take me up on it!

This is so true :(

Very good Bing  Your 108s look like new.

If your feeling brave enough I'll lend you my rotary. I brought it over a year ago and I'm still yet to use it. Just waiting for some warmer weather which looks like its just around the corner :D

It is extremely rewarding, and as she's normally a daily driver it is nice to have the time to do some, park her up, and then do some more. It is also knackering though, and I honestly couldn't have the patience to do this more than a couple of times a year...

Mr Hutch - she will be filthy, just for you :D

Woody - just you, it is necessary for you to be protected from too much roadster loveliness or you will end up seeing the light and buying an ///MR with the proceeds of your ///MC sale, and I would not like to be known as a Destroyer of True Love when Mrs Woody finds out

Ranski - indeed

Swiftly - it is amazing the blemishes on my bonnet that are hidden by standing 5 feet away... It hurts to look at them. What I might do while the weather is crap is put in some stone chip infill time - I have Langka Blob Away, which will help blend in the paint blobs to flat after an hour or two. Again, something I have never had the time to do on a completely clean car. Wait for pics of lots of little sticky tabs gently applied next to each chip so I know where to go back to :P

Maxman - next house for sure

OG - just Googled that Megs 220 - scary piece of kit a DA. Though I guess an amateur polisher it would at least help take some of the backache (and time) out of polishing and waxing. Damn. Another expensive purchase on the list :headbang:

Worth saying, the inside was done last week, so at least I don't have that all to do at the end and I should get a wee drive in the sunshine on Saturday. Or the rain - as it will look beeding lovely.

Thanks Jan - again, distance hides a multitude of sins when it comes to photos

I even dinged one of the spokes on one with the edge of another when I was stacking them up... Feckin' eejit :headbang:

Bing, you've been busy mate! So far am loving the write up and looking forward to reading more when the sun comes out again. Your efforts need to be documented with a dusk, roof down hoon and photography session I reckon :driving:

Thanks Stu

Indeed - and I have just finished installing Photoshop Elements on Wee Bing's new PC, so I will try and have some fun as well. I am loving this early retirement lark - must remember to buy a lottery ticket for tomorrow night :D

It could be you Bing

That's bloody lovely Bing. You're local too, so if you ever fancy popping out for some nice photos some time let me know.

Those 108's look simply stunning, so clean and fresh (you're mad wanting them refurbed).

As for polishing, you can't go too far wrong with a DA, the BMW hard paint is a saviour here, also working up from the lightest pads and polishes to the heaviest ones, you can be sure you're not going to abuse the paint.

Nice, good to see that it is all clean for when you pick me up next time from the garage :D

When I am back, I need to go visit you again as the self leveler for the Xenons on the Abarth don't work properly so another trip into sunny Kent 8)
