Decisions Decisions

So I went along to Bristol today to look at a 2.5l Z4 up for sale; very nice condition throughout, although had to haggle in tax for the car since it had expired!

Anyway, on the way home I passed Dick Lovett BMW and saw a rather nice 2.0l (yes I know they are not as grunty as the 2.5l or 3.0l but anything is a step up from a 1.4l Clio!). I've since seen another almost identical Z4 on autotrader which is near enough £2k cheaper. The question is, assuming everything is equal (I suspect the BMW dealership would offer 12 month warranty versus 3), which would you go for?

Thanks for your help!

personally i'd hold out for the 6 cyl, never got on with the N42 2.0 in my last e46 coupe , was a nightmare.

Out of the two though, the AUC bmw one is better as you've got a years worry free motoring as its under full warranty from BMW for a year.

+1 on the 6 cylinder.
How about this?

Found on Pistonheads and only done 54k miles. All for just £8500. You could use the spare £4k you'd save on servicing for the next 3 years?!

this.

or get some eibachs and CSL reps :)

Tricky question. Regardless I would look at AUC cars if you're dropping this kind of cash, it ensures you have the warranty and that the car should be a good 'un (although still give it the once over).

The 2.0 will be a nice step up from the 1.4 Clio, but don't expect the world. It's certainly fun, although you really need to keep it on the boil to make proper progress - 4k+ rpm. In isolation it's plenty of fun, but when you realise anything moderately warm is easily keeping up with you, you can be a bit disheartened. If you can afford it, I would get a 3.0.

i would get the 2.5 minimum, i think the engine noise adds to the already great experience, especially with the roof down....

As boogle said have you considered a 3.0 that is a year or two older? There are some out there in really good nick usually when they have been used as a weekend car. The step up in performance will be substantial from what your used to but having said that ive just upgraded from a diesel golf and the extra power is not 'mind blowing' once you are used to it. I suppose it depends what you want it for... performance, posing, both? Plus the fuel cosumption is almost identical on the 2.5 and 3.0. Just a thought :)

I would also say go for a 6 cylinder one preferably 3.0 .... although the 2.5 is no slouch .... its not really about the peformance but as easty says the sound of the engine makes a massive difference.
