decision 2.0 / 2.5

hi evryone i am currently looking to change my car to a z4 . I will be going to test drive one this week but i am stuck between whether to pay the extra and buy the 2.5 or just go for the 2 litre . As soon as i get the car i will be putting some aftermarket alloys on as i dont like the look of the standards . what have people changed there wheels to and do the m5 alloys fit the z4

What's your budget and what car age are you looking at? When I was looking I saw a lot of 2.0 and 2.2s being advertised at close to the 2.5l price range.

In terms of performance you're comparing a 4-cyl 2.0 to a 6-cyl 2.5 so there will be a big difference.

Alloys - did you mean you don't like any of the BMW alloys available for the Z4, or the standard set that ships?

my budged is around 18 k looking at 55, 06 . I dont like the standard alloys on the z4 i want something abit more flashy without going over the top i havnt looked into other bmw alloys as i thought they would want a fortune for them .

is the 2.0 litre that bad :o . i am currently driving a 210 bhp ibiza fr so was ready for a bit of drop in performance but dont want to have no power at all

When I was looking between the 2.5i and 2.0i there wasn't a marked difference in performance to me, its only 177hp against 150hp after all. The main difference is that glorous 6cyl soundtrack you don't get on the 2.0i, although the 2.0i does sound nice enough.

Rolling Rocket, welcome to our forum!

Try out both, give the 2.0i a good working out and maybe you'll prove me right or wrong! You could always, for 18k, surely get the 2.5si version with the 218bhp engine?

Good luck in your search, you won't regret a Z4 whichever engine you end up with :D

It depends what you are after I guess....cruising only or a bit of go as well? I've driven a fair few BMs of all shapes and sizes and never driven a 'bad' one yet...but for me a BM has to have a 6.

A 150BHP Z4 is going to feel much, much slower than your Ibiza - its heavier and 60BHP down, which doesn't sound alot but you will definitely feel it. Its like a 316 / 318 - it does the job just fine, not a bad car by any means and ideal if you are more of a cruiser - top down and relax - but do not expect performance. IMO 150BHP is just not enough for a car of this size and weight, and for the relatively modest increase in running costs a 2.5 or preferably a 3.0 would be the way to go...

Of course you should try both for yourself - you might not care with the roof down!

Another nod to 2.5 from me also.

Nothing wrong with the 2.0 but if you're thinking of the 2.5 then go for it.

My choice when I got my first Z4 was a 2.2. Then took a 2.5 out and fell more in love. it felt a lot quicker.

But seriously - go 2.5 if you can

Both 2.0l and 2.5l are going to feel slow compared to 210 bhp! But 17 bhp between 2.0l and 2.5l isn't what i call good power gains for the extra engine size!

My 2.0l isn't as quick as our Boxster but roadsters aren't all about pure speed anyway, top down nice blasts are the order of the day.

Ps drove back when i picked ours up and was getting 36mpg on the motorway! Currently 29mpg v 21mpg from our boxster.

You might even be able to stretch to a 2.5si.

I started looking at a 2.0i but tested a 2.2i and sounded nice being the six so decided against the four pot, but managed to source a pre registered 2.5si which is another 40bhp over the 2.5

I was about to post saying 200bhp.... rubbish, till i checked the specs! Thats really good power for a 2.5!

Now thats what to go for.
