I tried to take the central BMW badge off my car to replace it with an Alpina one but it must be held on by magic or something because I couldn't shift it. Any advise?

The concept is that it looks cleaner, IMO.

I removed the ///M badge on the rear of my Z4MC, because it looked like a total after-thought. I think it looks a lot better without the badge cluttering up the rear end...

Bare would be my description!

Fair enough. I quite like the cleaner look without the badge on mine though - but as always, looks are very much a personal thing.

Usually, people do this to hide the fact they've got a lower model than is available. People who have the highest model and do it are just being pretentious!

LOL! If you say so matey...!?

I would hardly say it was tricky to tell an M from an non-M without the help of a badge though. The quad-exhausts, bonnet darts, lower suspension etc all give more than enough visual clues.

Anyway, you've changed your tune a bit? Weren't you telling Zee42 to remove his badges only a few days ago!

Yes, stripe the roof (and loose the badges).

Wrong on all counts I'm afraid. I was referring to the differences between the 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 etc with my general comment about badging (despite my daft spelling mistake (loose / lose) ), and would therefore apply the pretentious rule to those with the Z4M. This is of course my opinion, but I think I'm right!

Maybe I can accept the 'clean' argument to a degree (although I feel some use it as an excuse). To me though, it makes the car look unfinished, and even as if someone's nicked the badge. As I've said before, if they didn't fit badges as standard, people would be fitting them after market.

I do however concede they are a pain in the ass to clean around.

I also concede, your side badge removal works fine, I am mainly referring to rear badges which is what most people refer to generally with other marques.

As to me suggesting Zee42 to remove the badges, I meant the ones on the front grill that can be clearly seen in the picture (3rd picture down)

So your laughter is null and void!

PS, maybe we should start the thread again

To summarize. Removing the rear badge which usually consists of a 318, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 3.0 type badge is a daft fad. Removing the side badges of the Z4 works, and I agree gives the car a smoother, uninterrupted look.

Removing any M badge on a M car is as silly as sticking one on a non M car.

I'm still lost why removing an M badge from an M car is in your eyes pretentious?

Maybe you're using the wrong word - as pretentious means to make an unjustified or excessive claim, or to assume importance, making an exaggerated outward show - none of which I can see are achieved by removing an M badge... ???

I still think the standard M badge on the Z4M just looks wrong - you won't convince me otherwise. There's nothing else on the back. It looks like a total afterthought, and would have perhaps been better placed on the lower right edge of the boot lid, or in the top right, like on all the other BMW range. I did think about *moving* the M badge to another position, but then decided it would look like I'd actually added an M badge to a car that wasn't, and positioned it in the wrong place as well. lol. There's nothing I can't stand more than those 318s with ///M3 badges that are either overly spaced, or in the wrong position. If you're going to try and make your car look like an M3, at least have the decency to make a decent effort of it!

I agree that people who add an M badge to a car that isn't are just idiots, trying to make out they have something they don't, and I've never understood that one.

So, I was talking to my dad about his 56? Skyliner. He said the first thing he did was have it "nosed and decked". What did that mean? He had the emblems and lettering removed, the holes filled with lead and painted over.

My 2.5 doesn't have the side badges by the repeaters, only the Z4 on the trunklid. I'd take that off if someone hadn't tried with a screwdriver. I will take that off next time I have the touch up paint out and feel like an adventure.

I say lose 'em!

I removed both the rear and side badges of my 3.0si. IMHO opinion, the badges cheapen the look of the car. If it wasn't for the insane cost, I would replace the side markers with the Hamman or Schnizter versions too. The diagonal side slash is the most distinctive feature of the car. The badges (and in my opinion, the side roundel) interupt the line and detract from the overall look of the car.

I'm also looking into changing or modifying the side marker roundells.

Oooh - what ideas did you have?

My mate that helped me with the roof change wanted to do something with them as he hates them. I see his point, though I don't hate them enough to change.. yet.

He said if I got him another set of side-repeaters etc, he was going to modify them to remove the big BMW badge, and flush-fit some kind of opaque halo, that could be lit up, a lot like an angel-eye sidelight.... sounded good! lol But a lot of effort too..

I dont know at this point. I like the idea of a side grill concept similar to Hamann or ACS but simple.

Each badge is a focal point on the vehicle. By removing them, it allows your eye to view the complete form of the vehicle without interuption.
Excellent and interesting point which I never really considered...
May need to re-think how I feel about this... :scratchhead:

I like my ///M badges, :D but I have a 318i badge from a car I had a few years ago. The prior owner must have taken it off.

yes, debadging or adding badges normally goes to making the car into a sleeper or making the car into more than it actually is. funniest one i've seen is a Geo with the Integra Type R badge on it. as many would say, that sooooooooo RICE!!!

i know most of us here are quite in the know about cars and realistically, the Z4 isn't THAT fast, but for sure it's quick and faster than most other cars on the road, but whether you drive a 2.5 or an M, when you drive by most people on the street they would not think of a Z4 as slow

let's say you took a Z4 (any model) with all the badges, drove it by a bunch of people, then drive the same car by the same people without the badges ... i doubt they would think any differently about the car!!

for those of us who wash the car often (ie. a few times a week) and wax the car a few times a year, not having badges makes the job WAAAAAAAAAAY easier!!!!

trying to pick out the wax residue from in between the numbers (ie. the "3" in a 3.0 and the "5" in the 2.5) is requires a very very concentrated effort, while without it there, you just glide over

oh yah, and the most ridiculous "debadging" I've ever heard of is from a story about the E46 M3

in case you didn't know, an E46M3 has side grills in the front 1/4 panels and on those grills says "M3". I've heard of people trying to turn their M3s into sleepers by debadging the "M"s off the car INCLUDING changing those 1/4 panels into regular 3-series ones

i just don't get it. i would be proud to drive an M and would be proud to have those "M"s on my car (as long as i really had an M, so i won't be putting any "M"s on my 3.0 anytime soon :P ) why would people go spend that much money on such a nice car just to make it look watered down????

why don't they just go buy a civic or say a hyundai accent and drop some crazy 300 hp engine in there?? THAT would be a true sleeper!!!
