Mt post wasn't a complaint mate, just an observation, If anything it is encouraging me to pick a book up for the first time in 10 years

Iain M Banks and Peter F Hamilton are hugely gifted authors - the latter's latest novel Great North Road is a crime / near-ish future sci-fi novel spanning Newcastle (of all places) and a couple of distant worlds linked to earth by 'gates'. Cleverly builds the story backwards and forwards at the same time, reaching into the characters' pasts to slowly reveal the truths behind the action (and their actions) in the present. Almost 1,000 pages IIRC, utterly absorbing, beautifully written - couldn't put it down, finished it in about 9 days.
Banks' novels tend to be far future 'space operas' - his Culture novels are an amazing envisioning of a future where humanity wants for almost nothing material because machines can provide pretty much anything, freeing it up to meddle / explore / evolve throughout a galaxy aboard ships that are in themselves characters in the stories.
Alastair Reynolds - a fellow Fifer who went to St Andrews University - is another masterful author. The first novel of his I read was Century Rain, after that I was hooked. Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap make up a huge, brilliant trilogy spanning a single theme but 3 differently presented stories which pulls all the threads together by the end. I am in awe of people who can imagine so....Big.

I've not read any of his SciFi stuff, looks like i've been missing out. I read The Wasp factory and Canal Dreams when they came out. I fully expected Canal Dreams to be made in to a film as its a great action story. The Wasp Factory is just plain weird.
Seems we have similar habits. I like Reynolds too. and .... Should we start a british sci fi fantasy thread bfeore Nosa pops?
