Dealing with Boy Racers

This thread is great.

Sad to admit, I have been known to partake in such activities when I had my Brabus Smart Fortwo. Mainly because the car was brilliantly quick for what it is.

Since moving up as it were, I've somewhat taken a back seat approach to it all. I think bluestreak56 hits the nail nicely on the head there.

Another reason for why I've gone down the route of track days. A somewhat safer environment to let it all out.

I come across this middle aged bloke in a black Z4M every now and again.I try to put him in his place but he is just too bloody fast.

However tempting I don't get involved, it can too easily get out of hand, red mist and all that, don't trust myself..

Was out Z4 in dark and had car come really close to rear, I thought it may be some person I knew but as I had only purchased it recently I dismissed that, stayed on my tail for over mile, so close I could not make out grill or see what make it was, it pulled along side, was police BMW had good look and sped off. I was shaken with how close it had been and wondered if they had wanted me to speed off? not a good experiance. :o

That's sound s farmilliar and a reason for always checking out the driver before any sparing fun, however mild, on a public highway.

Boy racers I don't really mind as they are generally car loving petrol heads who would swap their Corsas with blown manifold sounding exhausts for Zeds in a heartbeat if they got the chance. Many of them are just genuinely interested in seeing how the performance of their pride and joy compares to other more powerful cars after their most recent performance enhancing mod such as the addition of a chrome filler cap or something.

What does boil my piss however is when cocknockers in white vans or coke burning estate cars think it is a good idea to move their underpowered slug-mobiles into the right hand fast lane approaching roundabouts or traffic lights when they are going straight on. Especially annoying when two lanes merge into one and they lack the performance required to stay out of your way even when you pull away normally without accelerating harshly. Some of them even have the audacity to get annoyed at you because they end up in a silly position looking like a tit.

I can't say I really have any issues with boy racers, but have loads of issues with middle aged blokes in generic family cars! Every single one of them seems to want to get their Vectra/Insignia/Mondeo/Passat in front of me, once they've done that they calm down again unless I pass them, and then they're at it again with stupid overtakes, cutting people up etc.. It's especially noticeable on motorways in the 50 average zones where I always just use cruise control.

Why is it always the slow doddery drivers who get into the off-side lane to go straight on? Often when it's a dual carriageway the other side of the roundabout they go into the off-side lane & stay there for a fairly long time when there's nothing to overtake :scratchhead:

Had a guy in a Mx5 pull up next to me at some traffic lights i raced him to the speed limit which was 40 then just let him carry on

yes why does someone in a 2l diesel Transit think they can get away quicker than a 3.4l two-seater? :?

I've dealt with tailgaters before by dropping a gear or two and lifting off the throttle , your car slows quickly without brake lights , it usually wakes the tailgater up and makes them back off as they are to brain dead to work out what just happened . Obviously you need to choose your moment carefully .
Cops tailgating and baiting , some of my best mates work traffic in the north east , hmm , I'm saying nowt

A favourite that you can do quite easily on the bike is when someone is coming up fast behind you in the outside lane when you are in the middle is wait until they are level with you and then accelerate.
Most cars on the road cant cope.

Accelerating from 70mph to the rev limit in the ///M has a similar effect

Late one night on the M4, I had a little fun with a 330d coupe that came up behind me very rapidly and then tailgated me but didn't seem to want to pass. We were the only cars on the road and he followed me for five miles before the blue lights came on. He showed me a video in which I averaged 108mph and gave me the choice of three points or a court appearance and probable ban....

It's more middleaged arseholes i've trouble with, accelerating on straights desperate to keep you from merging in from filter lanes and such

had a 1.6lt mondeo try it yesterday from lights, edging forward kept looking over, it's bad enough if someone in a sporty looking albiet low performance car tries, but a fucking 1.6lt mondeo

...or deliberately accelerating in slow moving traffic to close a gap they can see you indicating to move into :x

Guy in the Kia was especially angry that my car had better acceleration and the Vauxhall guy was very annoyed and laughed at by his mate in the passenger seat.

How do you know so much about what is going on inside the other cars?! If I paid that much attention I'd probably crash. :?

Straight road, no traffic in front of me and know where the Z4 is on the road due to a combination of depth perception and cognitive ability gave me enough time to see the passenger.

That and I've been driving for just over 25 years so mostly know what's going on around me.

But to be honest I actually live in a Matrix type reality. Seconds for you is minutes for me so by slowing down time at will I can see what's happening in the other cars.

It amused me immensely when a middle aged chap in a 15+ year old Vectra tried to race me on a roundabout....He probably thought that a woman in her 20s didn't know how to handle a sports car....

Not quite relating to Zeds, but my other half used to have a VX220 Turbo. He said hardly anyone would try it on or be silly around him. However, when he changed to a Boxster, the amount of 'silliness' around him has increased no end....

It's interesting how other road users perceive you if you're in something remotely 'un boring'... :?
