Last few cars we've bought we got a bottle of wine and a small box of chocolates from Lloyds Bmw

Snap. That's what I got as well as a stay in the Hilton but that's cause I was buying it in Newcastle and they wanted to seal the deal. I only live 100 miles away so wasn't a huge journey but just a nice touch.

When we collected our is we got the free flowers for the Mrs, and when at home I looked in the boot they had put a litre of oil in there which I thought was a nice touch and very useful, just a bit concerned they were trying to tell me something.

A big discount before my deposit and yet we still got a big bouquet and a brolly.

It's all to do with personal quarterly targets, dealer volume bonuses and customer satisfaction scores that apparently 100% scores earns the dealership £2k off BMW.

I currently work in the sales dept of a main Mercedes dealer. I sell approx 14 cars per month both new and used.
Its interesting to hear some of the comments made about recent purchases. Some of the customers that come in to us are a real pleasure to deal with, they understand that we have steep targets to hit and that we are always under pressure to hit every target thats known to man. on our used cars we are not allowed to offer any discount at all. the road fund license even has to be paid for. new cars are different, with the online discount sites offering deals that strip out all of the profit from a car there is often no point in selling it.
Today I sold two mercedes ML350, both new, the combined retained profit was £300. I made a total of £80 commission before tax and ni across the two cars and we will treat both customers with all the courtesies that they, we and Mercedes would expect.

Some customers are a nightmare to deal with. its retail so we expect it and its not a problem.
these customers take your time, effort and resources and insist on taking out all of the margin that there is. they are often the ones that know about the customer surveys that they will receive and use that knowledge to gain whatever they can get away with. its gutting to spend hours with a customer, maybe two or three test drives, lend a car and provide several quotes just to see them then use the internet to drive down the price to cost or even below.

I get fed up with dealing with customers that expect to have a massive deal that strips all available profit away whilst insisting that they be treated to mats, tax, free cherished transfers etc. There is a price to be paid by someone.

The advent of the survey from the manufacturer is a blessing and a curse, customers now often use it against the sales exec with an attitude of whats in it for me.
the modern sales exec has all of his calls monitored and recorded so that he can be measured against a list of mandatory questions and responses. I could be talking to a customer 300 miles away but i still have to ask for an appointment. silly really.

My salary of £12000 is the same that i made in 1988 when i first started in the car trade. there is little profit left in the cars these days but the buying public insists on freebies. if you want a bunch of flowers, buy some. if mats are needed, pay the £70 and enjoy them why would you expect the dealer to pay for them?

The dealer group that i work for sells 30,000 cars a year, multiply that by £50 worth of fuel and flowers, mats and umbrellas.
When i buy a high value item, i dont want freebies. I want to be treated with respect and honesty and i want to feel valued. i dont expect or want a bunch of flowers or a free anything.

kat, great to hear it from the other side. I don't expect anything when I buy and pick up a car apart from a great experience and a well presented car. I know people like a bargain but it would seem, from what you have said is that these third party deal making sites are basically taking all the profit out it for the dealers and in turn, sales people and honestly I can't see how this can continue. Surely something will have to give somewhere? To hear you only will earn £80 commission on two significant sales is mind boggling.

When I purchased my Z4 I did what I thought was such a great deal that I didn't expect anything from them and I certainly didn't ask for anything so when I got what I did, I was genuinely overwhelmed.

I look for the best deal and the only thing I expect from my dealer is for him to execute the transaction efficiently,

It's really quite worrying how many dealers I've dealt with in the past haven't managed this.

I always treat people with respect and try to understand when things go wrong but lose the plot when dealers tell bare faced lies to cover their arses.

My Z4 purchase was the best car buying experience I've had and didn't involve any freebies, just a great deal executed by a friendly, professional group of people.

Well done Ridgeway Hampshire

I don't think the dealer should have to pay for them, I think the manufacturer should have them in the car as standard equipment.
Used cars also seem to have the mats removed by the dealer also, is this a money making exercise as most people will want mats and then have to purchase them?

Same as Jasey, i hav'nt asked and nor will i for anything, the ariel was an afterthought and if they give me the invoice i'll say nothing and pay it, it's really not a problem. I have met some of the most arrogant self important judging jerks in car sales showrooms, been treated like i'm something stuck to the bottom of their shoe, not all by any means, not had calls returned so I've gone elsewhere and had great service, their loss. 2 dealers i've been to have had big new re-furbs and moved to huge new sites so someone's making money somewhere, the service dept's make big profits. Is it not that the bosses won't share their big salaries with the staff so you get squeezed that way rather than the dealers not making money? I think it's only natural to get as good a deal as possible, if they can't do a price they won't, they set the price not the customer. Be interesting to see what percentage of sales are lost to internet sites as opposed to foot traffic sales. I hate the 'i'm the customer so i can treat you like dirt' attitude, i treat sales people, waiters/waitresses etc the same way i like to be treated. Anyway just my view as a customer, i'm no expert.

Well done Sytner Notts, great service.

An interesting look from the other side of the fence but can I ask who prevents you from discounting used cars?
