some arse wrote my daughter in law's little C2 off - 07 reg and she loved it - she got £3300 from the insurance and I've been trying to help her through the minefield of trying to buy a used car. Because of what happened she feels safer in a bigger car and quite likes the previous style Astra. Found one in a local main dealer Honda/Mazda garage - I've bought a couple of cars there in the past with no problems. Astra is a 58 plate low mileage 5 door at £4995 - not top spec but ok - as there is no part exchange thought a fair discount would be £500 as the top book value from a franchised dealer is a grand less. Garage prepared to lop off £250. The car is pretty clean but has a couple of sizeable bird poo marks on the bonnet - asked if they could do something with that if we paid top money - Fraid not sir - you have to expect this from a used car . Asked if they would come down just another £100 - " no sir - second hand cars are selling at a premium at the moment ".Have to say if I had something to part ex would I get more for it because of this premium ?.

No, you'd get next to nothing for it. I refuse to trade cars in now, it's so easy to sell cars privately because there are so many dealers like the one you experienced.

An Astra is hardly a rare car, you'll have your pick of the bunch so just go somewhere else, get a better one at a better price. Garages like that rely on people buying from them simply because they are local and they think there will be some kind of comeback should it turn out to be a lemon. Chances are they wouldn't want to know.

Agree with the above. Clearly an idiot and px prices are stupidly low right now.

We traded in my dads Audi A4 (2008 all extras, manual diesel, immaculate with 23k on the clock) and were offered £11k (which we negotiated up of course).

A few weeks after the trade it was up on the Audi West London site for £16,850 : http://www.audi.co.uk/used-cars/used-car-locator/a4/2.0-tdi-143-ps-se/london/604034038-14367.aspx?srcmdc=se_na_re_

Now reduced to £15450 I think they may sell it for £14,500

Again as above, its an Astra there are so many available, go for a private sale.

No good, missed out on a sale for £100. Twat

My local BMW dealer lost a deal on a nearly new 520d M Sport for £50. They would not budge so my friend bought elsewhere and in fact got a new one with better spec and less miles for the same money.

No part ex, so they said no more money in the car.
