DEAD ZED

A bit OTT but hoping for some good advice.

I tried to start the z yesterday, it wouldn't start but all the dash lights lit up and the car tried to turn over but wouldn't.

So today, after work, I tried some jump leads but before I did this I turned the key and had no dash lights! Tried jump starting but again no dash lights, door won't remotely lock and the window doesn't go up as it would normally when you close the door.

The car was fine Monday, so It's a bit strange that now it's dead.

I have nothing to test the battery so just wondered if it sounds like a standard, knackered battery?

I guess it's the first thing to try but would rather get straight to the fault, rather than changing non-faulty parts

How old is the battery ??? if the cells are gone then jump starting won"t always work

At this stage it's hard to tell if it's a battery or a charging issue, have you got a charger to get the battery back up to strength? Once the cars running you can check the charging system with a voltmeter to discount one or the other as the root cause.

No, Unfortunately I haven't.

I thought jump starting was similar? Not had much experience with batteries

Hmm, without a meter the condition of your battery is just guess work. Anyone close by with a meter/charger you could use?
Could you fit another battery temporarily & see if it starts or the dash lights return?
Rob

Jump leads aren't the best thing when you have a dead battery, unless you have a really good set, then you need a good battery to jump from too. Borrow a battery charger and see if you can charge it

No sorry can"t help, but now others can see where you are might be someone close by

Ignition switch?

I did consider that but the first time I tried to start it all the dash lights worked but now they don't. Seems to suggest a battery/alternator issue.

Think I'm gonna order a new battery and see if that works. Fingers crossed that's all it is

Online stores are good, usually next day - got a Varta E44 in mine and it's good. Once you get it going check the alternator output, that could have lead to the battery going flat.

Sounds defo like a battery to me. My 330 was left for 5 months on my mates drive and the same issue. After 24 hours on a trickle charger it has been as good as new.

Are you using the car regularly?

H.

Had the car about a month but it's not a daily, so not used an awful lot.

I looked online but then checked a local place called FRENCO?? a car parts company.

They had a Bosch battery at £70. So I went and got one.

Changed battery over, started first time but then I guess a full battery would mask any other underlying issues?

Anyway, started a second time and went for a half hour drive :driving: No issues yet but I'm guessing if it's anything else, only time will tell.

Edit: If it was the alternator, wouldn't the car have cut out while out driving?

With a new battery it would run for a while with a fubared alternator until the voltage dipped below a critical level, I would expect a warning light for it to appear though :?
If not used much try & hook up a battery maintainer to avoid flattening it again

Glad to hear the new battery has done the trick OP.

I hope that sorts it - now you just need to keep using it! :driving:
