Tried to start my home PC this afternoon and nothing, noticed a slight electrical burning smell, so disconnected the power and openend up the cover to find this.

The coolant in the factory sealed for life ECO CoolIT module has leaked all over the inside of the PC :x

The PC was custom built by MESH, but it's unfortunately now a few months out of the warranty, will see how I get on with a claim?

The only reason I went with this type of cooling is that I wanted an ultra quiet PC and the ECO ALC solutions had good reviews and this cooling module was recommended by the sales consultant at MESH. I've taken all the components out to see what I can salvage and it looks like the leak is from the actual cooling module itself.

Fortunately I have a recent backup of my data and the actual drives didn't get any coolant on them.

Always worth trying with the warranty claim anyway - was only just reading today that some companies actually have grace periods of a month or two when they'll still listen to claims and decide over 'good faith' gestures.

Mesh were always pretty reputable, and they're one of the last UK system builders. Give them a call and see what they say. Worst case you're probably looking at a system board and they cost £50-£100 plus a cooler. If you switch to fans that won't add much to the bill.

The sale of goods act protects you for up to 6 years .....anything expensive must last a "reasonable" length of time ......you have to take it up with the shop you purchased it from , they , not the manufacturer are responsable..... Comets replaced a motherboard after 18 months , Richer Sounds refunded the whole cost of a repair Sharp did to my old LCD Tv which was nearly 4 years old.....be polite but firm and you,l get a result

Have you tried turning it off and back on again

Given the strong smell of electrical burning, I thought I'd give that course of action a miss

It looks like it's a design or manufacturing fault, as lots of other owners of the ECO CoolIT have had similar issues after 12-18 months.

I think I'll be going back to air cooling.

Go for larger, slower moving fans which will be quieter. Also, don't fall for the stupid expensive ones. If you have an Intel one and tell me what model you have I might even have one lying around. No guarantees, but if I do you can have it. Mesh might give you a CPU cooler though, if you ask.

If you need to add a chassis fan go for either Cooler Master or Akasa which are both good and well priced. If your board supports it, get fans with rpm monitoring and the system will power them up and down as needed which keeps the noise down
