Dead M roady

Bonjourno,

Went to start the M and nothing, flat battery I presumed, which is a little strange as it hasn't been overly long since I last used it. Anyhoo, connected the jump leads, switched ignition on, all dash lights on as normal, switched to start, fairly nasty crack from under the bonnet and now dead, nothing at all, no electrics whatsoever.

Checked all the fuses, relay box is bone dry etc, battery terminals are tight.

Any ideas anyone? I'm wondering if the starter or solenoid has been draining it and shorted out?

It's under warranty so not panicking yet, but I'd like to hear any thoughts if possible.

:hattip:

arhhhhhhh lovely.... warranty... mans best friend.

call AA.... Call dealer.. Sit back and reeelllaaxxxx

Hmm, I would have said look at the starter but that wouldn't leave all your electrics dead, it's more deep rooted than that :?

This, but omit the bit about connecting jump leads or they'll find a way to make you responsible and not cover it (I'm an experienced cynic)!

Sounds like it could be the battery lead protection thingy, the one that breaks the supply in the event of a short circuit..

This, it's in the boot, check the powder fuse on your Batt. Makes a big bang/crack when it goes.

Im the same, I always think there has been a step missed out when someone tells a story, was the jump leads definately on the correct way?

Checked the circuit protector in the boot with a multimeter, it's fine, the battery's dead though, only getting 3 volts.

Still doesn't explain the crack I heard though.

Wondering if a cell has shorted in the battey.

Did you jump car With The points in the engine bay buddy
Red on back of bulk head and neg on the post in wing ?

Crack I'm just making a guess here, perhaps was the starter pulling all current left in battery and missed ?

Saying that as had a shed load of starter issues with my mazzer ( wrong alignment bolts!!) And id get a crack as another starter got eaten

Ps sorry e89 don't know where your jump points are my bad
But in Ms that's where are

Yes it's the M I'm talking about mate. Jumped it as you say, under the bonnet. I can only think a cell has collapsed in the battery, it's dead. Or a starter problem, I wandered if it's shorting.

So you have a spare battery to test it with?

As get an old one and try it

As maybe as said it's starter cracking like in my mazzer as wasn't getting power to fully throw

If based near me I have my old one could use
Near Aylesbury way

There are 2 leads to the surge protector in the boot, the crappy thin one that goes to the accessories, and the massive one with the powder charge on it thats dedicated to the alternator/starter. did you check both? i guess you did as you don't need a multi meter to see if the massive one has blown apart. just confirming you saw both visually? the thick one is a bit further away from the terminal.

I did Vanne yes, both are fine, visually and with a multimeter.

It sounded like the crack came from under the bonnet, but I suppose it could have been from the boot, it seems too much coincidence that the battery is killed and there's no other obvious problem.

I'll put it back and play dumb, let the warranty sort it out, goes against the grain as I like to sort things myself but as it's got one I may was well use it.

Wonder if it was the starter dead shorting and thats taken the battery out too ?

Use the warranty, although a starter and a battery aint big cash..

Could be Gaz, although the surge protector, I'm assuming that's what it is, in the boot before the battery is fine.

John. Not sure you are but I have a spare battery you can test the car with. It was on the Zed and not lasting long but it will be ok for this excercise

I am in Wigan.
