Hi, One of my keys no longer works remotely (the other one is fine) I'm assuming it needs a battery, but how do you get into it and what type of battery is it? Thanks.
The key should recharge while in the ignition?. Did it fail while a spare or when in use?. I would take it to any locksmith they should be able to change or tell you definitely they can't. Best of luck.
I tried replacing the battery in one of my keys following a YouTube vid. Not overly difficult to do but couldn't glue the two parts together easily and ended up wrapping cling film around it to keep it together. Hence not a good thing to do unless you know how. The guy at a key cutting place wouldn't touch it as said not that easy to do. Proceed with caution! Key still opens car though.
Have you tried csm180's advice about ignition charging?
The keys charge off an induction loop when in the ignition. Not sure if the engine has to be on or not though.
Get into the car, start the engine with the dead key and go for a drive. Then test the key for locking the car. If it works, then one key just powered down and needs so good charge while in the ignition.
I use my keys on alternate weeks, now and then, to keep them charged.
The Manual [p14 ] says "Each master key ... long-life battery... automatically recharged in the ignition switch during the journey. .. therefore use any master key not in normal use to drive the car on a lengthy trip at least every six months..."
I read this after 12 months ownership, using one key - tried the 2nd key and it worked fine
Thanks for all the advice. This is the key I have used for over a year now. The spare key was just sat in a drawer. I'll make sure they get alternated now but it does seem that maybe the internal "battery" has come to the end of its life. They can't charge and re-charge forever...... Or can they?
couple of things to try....
try placing it on a cordless toothbrush charger over night..... that can give some charge. I would personally keep the transponder and then get a new key made up - like the flip ones as would be maybe £30-40 all in compared with a new key at bmw for £170 or the like... any more info please just ask
