Dead engine

Hi all

I have a 62 plate z4 3.0i M sport high line, which I have had since new. I have covered 8500 miles since owning the car and I love the car. But now the engine is DEAD!!
Having heard the start of a rattle from the engine whilst under acceleration I took the car straight to the dealer. By the time I got there, approx 15miles later, it sounded like the engine was full of spanners and hammers!!!!

The engineer came out and listened to the engine which had no warning lights displayed and told me to turn it off. I have now been told the car requires a new engine as they have diagnosed an intermittent oil pump failure resulting in a catastrophic engine damage. I have been told that this will be covered under warranty (thank god...new engine cost £13k then labour etc = huge bill)

My question is, will this car with a new engine at only 8k miles have lost value for resale?

Is this fair for the garage to repair/replace the engine or should I be pushing for a new car due to the age and such a serious fault. Does anyone know where I stand legally or point me in the right direction.

As far as I am aware a 3l engine is no longer sold by BMW, now only selling the Turbo version so what are they going to actually put in? An old 3l that they would refurbish and then put in???

It won't have any impact on resale. Loads of cars driving round with new engines

Even though the 3.0 is no longer available I'm sure BMW will have a few kicking around the warehouse.
 
Hi Andy,

That sounds like you have had really bad luck and I am sorry to hear of your troubles.

The 3L Z4 engine you have in your car is usually a very good, strong, reliable and proven engine.

It has been in production for a while and any small niggles with it sorted out.

The dealer will get a replacement engine from BMW and I would imagine it will be a new engine as opposed to a reconditioned unit but ask the dealer to confirm. Although the N52 engine in your car may not be in production any longer, BMW will have many hundreds of them, shrink wrapped in a warehouse somewhere for situations such as yours.

It is not ideal having to have a new engine in the car and you have been very unlucky. In terms of if it would make a difference to resale, I personally would be a little put off by it if I knew but most people would not know anyway.

If the dealer does a really good job of replacing the engine, nobody will know.
 
I'm surprised they said it needs a new engine to be honest, but its probably easier to replace it than spend time taking it apart if they know its oil pump failure rather engine internals. A new engine shouldn't affect value if fully warranted by BMW.

You might be lucky and have an N20 fitted :D

A contractor probably supplies the engine and its easier for BMW to just stick a new one in and send faulty one back. Then they claim of contractor.

I'd guess the lack of oil, due to pump, failure has coused the big ends to fail. Thus requiring a new engine. I've had a new engine fitted in a Mondeo Si 24v at 40k after a similar failure and it actualy made the car a bit more valuable, when I floged it 6 months later. :)

I'm sure you know but in case you forget as I did, be sure to advise your insurance company (& DVLA) if you change your engine as I, in a previous life with a car made in Newport Pagnell, didn't, and when I subsequently found a need to make a claim I was told 'no as the car has been modified' eh ???? Same cc, same output, same everything but as I hadn't informed them of the change of the engine it was tough luck sunshine :thumbsdown:

Took bloomin ages and so much toing and froing even though it was a faulty unit and was changed at the factory. Best thing ever was when I handed the keys to the new owner a couple of years later and waved bye bye !!!
