De-icer damage

As I defrosted my car today it crossed my mind whether de-icer causes any damage etc. I thought what better place to get an answer than here.

i guess the deicer stuff can cause premature degregation of your wipers, but cant see much more damage..i'd avoid it off the paintwork though.

Use Halfords stuff at your own peril.

This is what screenwash does from Halfords (taken from the X forum):

Hi Ruby, you could make a strong mix of BMW screenwash which should be safe. A good coat of wax should repell most. I'd be more worried about the underside of the vehicle once road salting/gritting kicks off.

I try to give it a jet wash to get the worst off and remove the corrosive chemicals.

I'm guessing what Ruby is asking is using deicer spray or the like? on the windcreen etc.

When deicing the car I tend to start up first and put heater on and warm the inside up a bit first. I never use a scraper on the glass but will use an aerosol deicer and spray in short burts in the centre of the screen working outwards trying not to get any on roof and paintwork, once the ice melts will check the wiper blades aren't stuck to the screen and will sweep the screen and wipe any deicer away. I'm sure it shouldn't cause any long term paint issues if used infrequently.

Tim.

:)

I buy the screen wash and de-icer from BMW online, hardly a lot more expensive but is safe at least.

(and smells very nice :)

Yes this is what I mean..thanks for the tips, I like the detail of how to spray the deicer on windscreen

I find a drop of lemonade and a slice of lemon takes the edge off , but as always every thing in moderation.....

I just start the car, put the blowers on "windscreen demist" and full temp. 3 or 4 minutes later its ready to drive away, nice and warm. Dont use de-icer as it can strip wax.

Well ice scrapers are hardly perfect either! I've a huge scratch on my screen after recent ice scraping.. No win.. Scratched screen or worries about defrosting spray!!

Wow that would have taken reasonable force! I am too gentle, this would never happen to me.

Nope... No force.. Just scraped off the ice with a plastic scraper.. Bit of grit = scratch.

You say it would never happen to you?
