De-grease a err...bbq

Ok, so please be kind to me, as this could be a very stoooopid question, but it’s something I have been wondering for a while.

We got a gas bbq last year and the plan was to give it a good clean before the winter.

Well, it didn’t get cleaned but has been in the garage out of the rain etc.

So, it’s covered in cooking grease (from my experiments to cook the perfect steak!).

Can I use some sort of pre-wash, ie citrus pre-clean to help de-grease it, or am I barking completely up the wrong tree?

If I protected the burners could I just spray it on etc?

Just leave it and use.
Will add to the flavour... like a well-seasoned chopping board

Don't think I've ever "cleaned" a gas BBQ!

I just turn it on full blast until the temp gauge indicates well over 200c for a few minutes and then scrub away with one of those purpose made metal bristle BBQ scrubbing brush thingymebobbys.

Then turn down to a good temp and whack on the burgers. As Chris points out... all adds to the flavour :D

Ours gets scrubbed clean after every use. Now rusty. May be we should leave it covered in grease.

Put on grass. Snowfoam, powerwash, let grass dry, cut grass. Sorted.....hope noone has washing out. :drinkwine:

We used to have a little charcoal one that we had for about 15 years but I got tired of stinking of smoke every time I used it, so went for gas for convenience, maybe not a purist option, but means we use it more often now.

I normally do the high heat thing after use but this is the greasy crud from last year, wanted it clean for new season.

We have a wire brush for the grill plates and it has scratched the enamel so they rust, therefore the question about pre wash etc.
