I had a new manual gearbox in my old 3.0, was no mention of fixing it or even stripping it, just drop a new one in and send the old one back.
Was your problem always evident in the time you had it, or was it a recent thing?
I got the car AUC at 5000 miles. It appears from the log book to have been owned privately which means it was either a repo or they got rid because they didn't like it for some reason. Always made me wonder that.
In any event, its been the most problematic car I've ever owned, albeit also the most complex. I consider myself something of a partaker in a stockholm syndrome in that as much as the car has been a pain, I love it to bits and I think, finally, I'm nearing the end of the road of most of the issues (and I'll be extending warranty to ensure it).
The DCT was a tricky one to work with as I've never experienced a car with such a transmission. I thought the vibrations I was feeling were normal, until one day when I got in the car and when I set off it felt as though the clutch was juddering very badly, the car shook for a few seconds before settling down. I put it down to a one off, until, a few months later it did the exact same thing. Over the course of a year I learned the circumstances that produced both the small vibrations and the larger judder that happened from time to time.
I mentioned it to the local dealer while it was in for some rattles to be sorted out but they couldn't detect it, even having kept the car for several days and several drives. My main concern was not with the vibrations, I felt I could live with those, they were minor/just irritating. The larger judder however, concerned me that it could be a fault on a very expensive transmission which could go bang.
Ultimately while it was in recently for another minor issue, they called to tell me they had managed to replicate the vibration, however minor. They'd topped up the transmission fluid (One has to ask why it wasn't full anyhow) and reloaded the DCT software (which incidentally has changed the graphics on my dash display). Unfortunately this did not resolve the fault, and after it went back for another day for them to look again, they called to tell me the clutches would likely need replacing as the next step.
I was a little alarmed, I really don't mind bits of trim being fixed, rattles etc, but a DCT replacement is quite a big job. Some hours later they called again to say they'd spoken with BMW and that the clutches would not be replaced, the entire transmission unit would be. I was mildly happier given they'd not be taking the DCT apart, but still concerned about the whole thing.
Two days later I collected the car, and I have to say on first impressions, they've done a fine job and the transmission is very, very smooth. It does make you wonder if it was a fault at manufacture, or something the prior owner did (like kicking its arse while still running in). In any event, I have a DCT with just 100 miles on it and I'm quite happy now.
