DCT Vibration

Oh... did I mention BMW finally fixed the vibration issue I had with my DCT? Guess what it was (and no it wasn't driver error thank you)...

That's just it.. Brand new dct transmission because they had no idea what was causing it..

I find things like that bug me as I'm the 'want to take apart and understand' type.

I had a new manual gearbox in my old 3.0, was no mention of fixing it or even stripping it, just drop a new one in and send the old one back.

Was your problem always evident in the time you had it, or was it a recent thing?

My golf DCG box was a little sticky on the downshift, occasionally snatching as it went from second to first. They changed the mechatronic unit twice, then the entire box as they couldn't work it out. I don't know if they fixed it as they bought the car from me!

Tapatalking...

I got the car AUC at 5000 miles. It appears from the log book to have been owned privately which means it was either a repo or they got rid because they didn't like it for some reason. Always made me wonder that.

In any event, its been the most problematic car I've ever owned, albeit also the most complex. I consider myself something of a partaker in a stockholm syndrome in that as much as the car has been a pain, I love it to bits and I think, finally, I'm nearing the end of the road of most of the issues (and I'll be extending warranty to ensure it).

The DCT was a tricky one to work with as I've never experienced a car with such a transmission. I thought the vibrations I was feeling were normal, until one day when I got in the car and when I set off it felt as though the clutch was juddering very badly, the car shook for a few seconds before settling down. I put it down to a one off, until, a few months later it did the exact same thing. Over the course of a year I learned the circumstances that produced both the small vibrations and the larger judder that happened from time to time.

I mentioned it to the local dealer while it was in for some rattles to be sorted out but they couldn't detect it, even having kept the car for several days and several drives. My main concern was not with the vibrations, I felt I could live with those, they were minor/just irritating. The larger judder however, concerned me that it could be a fault on a very expensive transmission which could go bang.

Ultimately while it was in recently for another minor issue, they called to tell me they had managed to replicate the vibration, however minor. They'd topped up the transmission fluid (One has to ask why it wasn't full anyhow) and reloaded the DCT software (which incidentally has changed the graphics on my dash display). Unfortunately this did not resolve the fault, and after it went back for another day for them to look again, they called to tell me the clutches would likely need replacing as the next step.

I was a little alarmed, I really don't mind bits of trim being fixed, rattles etc, but a DCT replacement is quite a big job. Some hours later they called again to say they'd spoken with BMW and that the clutches would not be replaced, the entire transmission unit would be. I was mildly happier given they'd not be taking the DCT apart, but still concerned about the whole thing.

Two days later I collected the car, and I have to say on first impressions, they've done a fine job and the transmission is very, very smooth. It does make you wonder if it was a fault at manufacture, or something the prior owner did (like kicking its arse while still running in). In any event, I have a DCT with just 100 miles on it and I'm quite happy now.

Bloody hell Maniac, I can't believe that one car could have so many things go wrong!
I have a virtually identical car ( not got adaptive suspension), and apart from the odd rattle, everything has been fine over the last 3000 miles and 7 months. Hope I'm not tempting fate now!
I would have thought that you would have been offered something in the way of a good will gesture/compenstation for all of your troubles.
Mind you, roof down/foot down, it is easy to forgive this car just about anything.

In truth, only a couple of things actually went wrong, like the heated screen and HPFP failing (perhaps the 296 issue). The rest most people would put up with probably... but not me!

Yeah new transmission should hopefully be OK. I do like DCT boxes but they do seem to suffer from more issues than torque converter boxes, thinking especially the Audi TT here.

Are you keeping it for a while now?

That's a tough one Sars. I have 5 months manufacturers warranty remaining, and given the issues I've had with the car I certainly wouldn't continue to keep it past that date unless I take out the insured warranty. Here in Manchester this is a hideously expensive car to run and maintain, with insurance around the £1500 a year mark, rising fuel costs etc. I do it, because I want to.

I do still love the car, and consider myself fortunate to have this exact model in a specification I still marvel at. On the other hand, I cringe every time I see a pothole as the 19's are not forgiving and there's that doubt in my mind about 'what next'.

I've owned plenty of cars before and I've never loved, nor simultaneously been worried about a car so much as I have the Z. I recently had a new 520d Tourer as a loan car, and I can confidently say having driven many other cars in the last 12 months, that the 520dT will likely be my next move in 6-12 months time. Its a scale change to be certain, but I found myself feeling good that it was very practical, more comfortable, had all the equipment, while still looking like a very nice car indeed (in M sport guise). I'd be happy with that, I liked it, and while I'd certainly miss the 300+bhp, I'd get used to it, and likely so would my improving bank balance (diesel/lower insurance).

For now though, I'll be making the most of my Z, taking silly amounts of care over it as I always have, and enjoying what it has to offer after all my (and BMW's) hard work to make it just right.

Can't get over how much your insurance is  .

I'm in Belfast which is well known for very high insurance premiums and I am only paying £300 for the 35iS

That price does seem ridiculous....they are killing you.....
The amounts charged by these insurance companies is so wildly different, I can't get my head round it all.
For example, I pay around the £210 mark (age 61, 75% Protected NCB with LV=).

Have you got TRACKER fitted?
I paid a one-off (no annual subs) fee of £288 in 2009. Fitted by BMW Dealer on delivery of car.
Would that help your premiums?

Jeez....in 10 years, you're out £15,000.....(or most likely more......)
