I’m looking for a 35i, as I’m after a cruiser that’s still fun. I’ve come from a Z4MC, which was excellent in many ways, but uncomfortable, expensive, and largely pointless given the quality of U.K. roads. I also really disliked the adaptive throttle - coming off a motorway it would require huge travel to blip the throttle at all to downchange into a roundabout, but after a few miles of spirited B roads, the slightest throttle travel would add 3k rpm! This made downshifts a guessing game: how much travel will be required to rev match this time - who knows?! I love to heel-toe all day long in my Tuscan (an actual cable throttle!), but the Z4MC was inconsistent and frankly unpleasant.
Thus the DCT sounds good, and whilst I’d generally prefer a manual, I don’t like manuals with non-linear throttle maps for the above reasons.
So I have two sets of questions and would be really grateful for some guidance:
1) I’ve heard there are multiple throttle settings available. Was this an option or is it standard on the 35i without the M Sport suspension? If it exists, is a linear, non-adaptive map an option?
2) I’ve read reviews saying the DCT paddles operate weirdly - pull towards you for downshift and push away for upshift? Is this true? I used to have an E39 that shifted that same way, but my more recent E92 shifts the ‘correct’ way (pull to upshift, push to downshift) so I really hoped BMW had learned that the former is a counter intuitive direction of movement....
In the E39 there was a simple way to reverse the direction - is that the case on the E89?
I’m honestly not sure I could live with the reverse paddles, so would wait for a good manual to come along if nothing can be done.
Many thanks!
