Tim.

Remember them - happy days! We actually got to make a decision for ourselves (great for those of us that could actually make one)!

But now sadly all dumbed down to the level of those who don't even know what a decision is! So now we have ABS, DSC, multiple air-bags, pre-tensioners, flappy-paddles, configurable driving settings and all that cr*p - please chuck it all in the bin FFS!

I have survived until now despite my dad's first 2 cars not even having seat-belts - good for me, even if not for you!

I remember me and my sisters bouncing around and cheering, in the back of a mk ii Cortina, as mum got it over 100 on the M6

She still drives down the M6 from Southport to Cornwall every year at 78.

You have been warned.

78 is probably the most any MKII Cortina could ever manage back in the day - 100 was just a random pointer on the speedo! My sh*gged out rep special with rubber mats on the floor and vinyl seats was actually scary at an indicated 90 going down a big hill (even when I was young and therefore indestructible!) - first car for me so special in a way, but removing the rose-tints it was a rusty POS!

If you removed all that tech they would have to make the cars slower as people, especially youngsters, would not be able to drive them without crashing.
So many people are now too reliant on things like ABS and traction control.

Ahh the Mk2 Cortina. Once drove from Hampton Court to Kingston with 13 passengers.

The halcion days before all this nanny state pish

That beats my six passengers and I driving around in a Mk I Fiesta  The three of us in the front had two seat belts between us, the three in the back had none, and the guy kneeling in the boot could see the road through the rusty holes in the floor!

Learned to drive in one of these, which was my first car. No ABS, DSC, airbags, seat-belts and with indicators that were little orange arms that came out the side and generally needed to be supplemented with the good old hand signals. A lovely car with beautiful leather seats, wooden trim and even had running boards.

Mine was a 1947 model and I bought it for £50 - I wish I still had it!!

Apparently the top speed was 96mph. So I'm giving the old girl the benefit of the doubt. :P I was still in shorts at the time.

Lovely jubilee

Well he looked a little shocked and I'm not surprised!

I remember sitting on a cushion on the handbrake in the front of my Dad's van between Mum and Dad. Then he had a bus seat put in the back - not bolted in or anything just put in the back - we flew all over the place when sitting on it . . . we thought it was fun :o

I can remember the first car I got with seat belts - they were still not mandatory but I felt I was really going to drive when I clipped it on (not like todays belts - these were static and had to be adjusted to fit properly)

Would not like to have been a police officer fire or ambulance driver in those days - must have been some terrible sights at accidents
