Day Trip to France - Anyone?

I mentioned this when I first joined this esteemed group. I would quite fancy a day trip to France (X'ing via either Ferry Dover- Calais, or Eurotunnel). Then a nice drive down to Le Touquet or Boulogne old town for lunch followed by a drive along some of the country lanes. I wasn't intending it to be a booze cruise (no point now with poor exchange rate anyways), but a means to meet up, enjoy a ride and a meal with a glass of wine. Anyone interested enough to commit to a date? Bonnet de douche, bonnet de douche!

Indeed why not. I still have a number of Eurotunnel crossings I have to use from the 10 I bought.

Can't commit to any given date at present due to as yet unknown on call commitments at work, but I'm definitely interested so keep me posted...

I thought Sept' would be a good time of year as herberts have all gone back to school, and usually we get nice weather in early part. Saturdays or Sundays suit me so if there is a preference? How about w/e 4th/5th or 11th/12th?

There is a small supermarche on way into Boulogne from motorway which is adequate to buy some wine/beer and stuff you like but can't get at home. Some nice restaurants in the walled old town there. Or straight to Le Touquet, or even to St Cecile Plage near Etaples which has a large and free car park and a few reasonable restaurants.

OK, ball is rolling!

I would like to skip any booze buying parts.

For me, the trip would be about nice roads, nice destination restaurant and nice company.

The first weekend in september would not be advisable as most schools go back on the monday so you might get an influx of people heading back to the UK.

Saturday preferred as I dislike coming home late on a sunday and then straight back to work on monday morning.

Okey dokey, second weekend sounds good to me too. I am easy as I said regarding sat/sun. I am not into booze cruise myself, but the kids will kill me if I come back without Custard Tart (a.k.a Flan), Madeleines and some strange choc biscuits.

Up in the hills above Camiers there is a nice view of the sea. Along the road towards Etaples is a magnificent war cemetery designed by Lutyens Camiers was used as a field hospital and most of the war dead in the cemetery were from there. You may remember during the beef wars some French oiks wrote on it in red paint "Roast beefs go home".

Cecile Plage near Camiers has a vast beach with some WW2 concrete bunkers. One is now entirely upside down having had the sand below it eroded away. There is a large square there with apartments and a few reasonable restaurants. I am a Moules man myself, avec tarte au pommes for afters.

Distances: Calais to Boulogne about 35k. Boulogne to Camiers about 25k. Camiers to Le Touquet about 12k. This is all avoiding toll road. The D road between Boulogne-Etaples is a mix of bends, hills long straights with good quality surface, some room to overtake slow moving French vehicles (if you can find one that is!)

Ball still rolling, will it gather moss?

sounds good, I will check with the diary :D

our anniversary is around then, and I would hate to get that date wrong :D ;)

"Around ? Around?" Man, you are in deep trouble if you don't know the exact date. This is why I got married on the last day in August, easy to remember.

20 years this year ...

8 Sept 2001  and I didn't have to ask

Point to note is that I will only do Eurotunnel as I will not subject my car to a ferry scratching excersize. On previous runs, meeting at the car park at the Eurotunnel itself has worked very well (you can not miss eachother ...).

This sounds like it could be interesting. I'll keep an eye on the thread

hahah, 14th February for me :- absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to forget :D

will keep an eye on the thread. We're looking to move up North again but if we're still near Cambridge it'll make a nice run out.

I thought I would resurect this thread as time is marching on. I am dead keen for a number of reasonss, the top 2 being 1) A chance to meet other forum memberss and 2) A chance to meet other forum members in a convivial atmosphere over a pot of moules.

Subject to ideas from elsewhere I would like to travel Eurotunnel and drive down to Boulongne Old Town (for coffee and some photo opportunities - There is a large square there with some classic French cars filled with plants and some are half buried! Will make a nice juxtaposition)

The A16 motorway from Coquelles to Boulogne is a fast toll free run. Alternatively, the D940 down to boulogne, but I don't know the quaality of that part of the 940 as a driving experience.

Coffee and a wander/photo's

Boulogne to Camiers on the D940. Quite a nice run, and down to St Cecile Plage for lunch in the square next to the beach. Has a large car park. Huge beach when tide out. Restaurants are reasonable and not too dear.

Camiers to Etaples war cemetery, built to a design by Lutyens. A beautifully peaceful place with sweeping views down to the sea.

Drive on to Le Touquet for coffee/photo's

Then hell for leather back to Eurotunnel.( 940 to Camiers then on to A16)

It's not the Stelvio or San Bernardino, it's not the Ring. Just a nice day out with mature people, good company, people who like to drive great cars AND take in the delights France has to offer.

I am sure we will attract a lot of attention from the locals. By the way, there is a fantastic patisserie in Boulogne, so bring a cool box and treat yourself to some Flan (custard tart.....to die for!)

If anyone has a reasonable video camera, I'd like to edit the video.

Shall we start with a list of names?

Its our aniversary on the 9th, we always try and celebrate - if that s the word- with a trip somewhere. If its a definate count us in.
