I finally sold my Z4 Coupe.

It was the best looking car I ever owned and by far the worst car I ever owned.

It felt solid and well built when standing still but rattled and buzzed like crazy when it moved

It had a great sounding exhaust which I couldn't hear since I wore iPod headphones to drown the rattles.

It was a fast car but dangerous to drive quickly because of the twitchy electronic steering.

It had RFTs for safety but these made it dangerous on my local roads because they tramlined into oncoming traffic.

It was built by BMW (which represents qualit y) it was in the stealers 12 times in two years with a long list of quality issues.

It was backed by a "premium" service network but I found BMW service staff to be, at best, incompetent and, at worst, corrupt.

It came from a company that prides itself on customer service, yet I was given a courtesy car only twice and had to pay both times (other times I had to take the bus or get a lift)

I sold it to BMW (at Trade book value) because I could not take a private individual's (private book value) money and claim it was worth it.

I was happy to have people see the car but was embarrassed to have any passengers in the car.

I regretted, every single day, ever buying the car

I look at the space where it used to sit and am relieved.

"BMW - the Ultimate Driving Machine" - you should be so proud

I wish you all a lot of happiness with your own Z4s and hope you don't have the same experiences I had.

Sorry to hear that you sold your Z4. It was very usual for a BMW visiting garage 12 times in 2 years. Your Z was probably exceptional.

What is your next car then?

I had a BMW MINI like that once. One made in the first year of production. I had BMW MINI take it back and build me a new after 7 months! I've since had 3 MINI's and they have been fine. They happen. Friday cars! I must admit that the premium brand BMW tries to portray isn't the one always experienced by the owners. They are no different to a company like Ford at the end of the day.
Good luck in what you buy next! I too may be moving on soon. Not because I don't like the Z4, but I just fancy a change. :)

Sorry to see you go Dave. I know your thoughts are echoed by many in the community. I like my Z4 and I love the design, but as a company I am less than impressed with BMW to the point that unless absolutely necessary I will not deal with them at all but instead will go with a good Indy.

Sorry you had so many problems and I hope you enjoy whatever you move on to... if you get chance post a pic of whatever you get next, it's always interesting to see what members move on to.

Cheers

I tried it but did not really work for me. I had a Volvo S40 for 6 months after owning a 318i for years, then I bought a 523i SE (E39), and had it over 3 years. After the E39, I bought a Lotus Elise S1 (another mistake), and only had it for 2-3 weeks. It was too hardcore for me, and went back and bought a 323Ci and kept it over 2 years at least. After that, I had 523i Sport (E60) over 3 years, and my Z4 now (7 months and counting). :)

Wow, not a good ownership experience then.
I certainly haven't been impressed by the dealerships either. I just never got the feeling they cared. There are much better out there, but there's also a lot worse.

Most of the handling issues would have been sorted by switching to normal tyres though.

Wow, sorry you've had so much trouble. Mine has been back, what, 4 times over 2 years? Oil change at one year, 15K service, state inspection (with a trim piece replaced and felt tape added to pad some of the plastic trim rattles in the hatch) and alignment when I put on Michelin PS2 ZPs. Dealers also seem to vary- I love mine and my service adviser is exceptional. I've had zero problems with the electronic steering, tramlining is due to the road, not the car and I'm loving every minute of it. That said, it IS a very stiff, very quick sports car and I don't expect it to ride as smoothly and quietly as a 5 series.

sorry that you fell on such a lemon. Mine is a 03', 45K, super reliable, never a single major issue (although it's always been a summer driver only, so perhaps that has helped). Good luck on your next purchase...maybe a 370Z?

sorry to hear about your car. as above mine is a 53 with 41000 on the clock and i have had no issues at all so far.

unfortunate that your z4 experience was such a bad one. i love mine and if i ever looked out the window and saw the space where it 'once was' my heart would shatter!

anyway good luck with your next motor

Hmmm...nice to hear someone else probably has a folded toilet roll tube jammed between the console and the dash to stop it rattling, like me (I've just got no style, it was the first thing I could find!), and may have been kept waiting in the stealership for nearly FIVE HOURS while some nincumpoop tried three times to reinitialise a replacement ECU (under warranty fortunately).....but it remains worth it!

I am on my 3rd Z4 and have enjoyed them all with very few problems and my dealer is really excellent. I agree that the run flats are just terrible and even dangerous and that is why I switched them out for Goodyear F1's on my first 2 Z4's. Sorry to hear about all the issues.... :(
Let us know what you move on to... :driving:

There's always a few bad examples (Friday afternoon cars) of pretty much every car. I had a Renault Clio 172 (I know, French isn't a good example!) that was terrible, but on the other hand knew loads of people with completely reliable ones. I loved that car regardless though almost until the end.

What's the replacement going to be? Not another BMW I guess?

Well mines been in for a fair bit of warrenty work...Hopefully all sus'd now. But so far i'm not overly impressed with the BMW ownership experience.

Don't worry Adam, as others have said sometimes people get a crap one from bmw that is unacceptable. I think each car has had some type of problems here and there, but so does every other car on the market. I would say we have only had maybe a handful of people have this many problems that have posted about it.

That said, I would still get one with an extended warranty.

Sorry about your car experience. They tend to vary and unfortunutely you drew the crap end of the stick. the least I can say is that you surely do have good taste in asthetics bc the zed is a beautiful car. But oh well. Let's hope that next time you get a good one.

And f**k the dealers.
