Dashboard lights

Can you peeps please help me... are the dashboard lights meant to come when the key has been turned on or engine fired up. Mine only come on when I switch on the lights but otherwise nothing....(just two black holes). is this normal... This question may sound a bit dumb but my dials look a bit dingy in normal daylight driving...

Hi, from memory the instrument lighting came on with the headlights :?

Maybe its cos I am used to my Volvo dash with bright led display that the z4 instrument cluster looks so dark.. and my Z4 is 2006 after all.... I can always run it with side lights on I suppose in order to light it up.... As I have only had the car a short while I am on a learning curve how stuff works.... or doesn't ….. so far so good and all seems well.. BMW on the whole seem to build there cars to last and my Z4 I think is a good example of this..
