Dash Problem

Hi everyone looking for some advice. I have an 04 3.0l Z4 and it has been a dream since I have had it. I drove home from work last night and all was fine with it, I havent had a problem with it since having it. However this evening I have jumped in the car and started it up which it did first time as usual. However I noticed that the speedo was going mad and was flicking up to 100mph while stationary. Also the handbrake light, abs, traction control light, tyre pressure light are all on. The car is driving fine and the rev counter is ok. The petrol gauge is working and the temp gauge is as normal bang in the middle. Has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong and wil I damage the car by driving it ? As I said it drives perfectly still. The lights which are on are all on yellow not red. Do you think it could be anything to do with the freezing conditions ? Any help would be great thanks.

It's highly unlikely to be the temperature, I've driven various beemers at temperatures ranging from -25C to +35C and never had any problems with the car. Freezing my butt off is another story...

To be honest I didnt think it would be as a result of the weather. Any other suggestions then and whats your vies on driving it as it is ?

None of the warning lights are critical (handbrake, tyre pressure, traction & ABS) so I wouldn't worry too much about driving the car for a short period of time. Most likely there's simply something wrong with the indicator lights, which a dealer or garage should be able to fix easily. I'm no mechanic tho!

You may have an earthing issue, possibly a multi-earth loose. At work i've seen similar problems to yours because of poor earthing.I'm not sure exactly where the earthing points are on the Z4, but have a look at the obvious ones in the engine bay first.

Edited to add, have you tried disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes to see if it clears the issue?

Price a replacement battery and check to make sure your mobile is fully charged. Or, have the battery and alternator checked. I'm betting on a new battery.

Hi just had the results of the diagnostics test and the problem is a faulty rear left ABS sensor. Apparently its a cheap and simple fix :D

Good to hear you've got it fixed, but the syptoms you've describe seems strange. Usually if there is a fault with the wheel sensors then just the ABS light in the pod illuminates. As someone else said you can get all the lights to come on if you try starting a car with an almost flat battery.

Well hopefully it is sorted now with the new sensor. The car never has any trouble starting so do you think it would be a battery problem ? How would I know if the battery is almost flat ?

They can run a quick check on the battery. It takes seconds. Mine had 10 volts but couldn't produce much amperage (or start the car without the light show you described. Bad cell in the battery. Actually, it made me happy. Car and original battery will be 6 years old next February. A new battery is about the cheapest thing to fix ($125). Good luck.
