Dash mount for phone?

I use my phone for sat-nav on longer trips. In my 1er I used one of those spider-grippy things that fits in the vents, but due to the curve jutting out at the bottom of the vent on the E89, it doesn't sit in right.
I don't really want a windscreen mount, so what does anyone else do?
I saw one which looked like a bracket that screwed/slotted in on the passenger side of the radio, but that's a bit low down for sat-nav use.

I'm half tempted to make something that perhaps attaches inside the dash-top cubby in some way...

HI Jmb

Would something like this do for you?
http://www.dsldevelopments.com/brodit/fitting_Instructions/Proclip.asp?Brodit=854347&Make=BMW&Model=Z4

I have a Broadit clip on my 07 z4. Have had it also on all of my cars. They are great. A little pricey but never needs replacing and never comes off!

I'm sure many more members will be able to confirm how good they are!

This is what I would go for.

That's what I would go for too. Though it's less intrusive on the e85/6. Shame it covers part of an air vent :(

That looks ideal - like you say, a bit pricey, but if it's neat and doesn't wobble around then it's probably worth the dosh. I did have to look under 'PDA' to find recent phones though...

I've got a Brodit clip to mount my Galaxy Note into my E89, it's great. recommended

I have Brodit Pro-clips in all of my cars. The one in the VW is similar to the E89 one in that it straddles a vent. It's very neat and sturdy, much better than windscreen suction cups etc.

Hmm, I placed an order back on the 23rd, money gone out of my Paypal account, but I've received no communication at all from dsldevelopments. Sent an email on xmas eve and yesterday, no replies either.
Have they gone out of business or something?

EDIT - just got a reply. They were closed for the xmas break. I had wondered if it was that, but the lack of a note on the website or any automated email was a bit disconcerting.

Hi,

I use something similar to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cygnett-Dashview-Windscreen-Car-Mount-For-All-Mobile-Phones-/121093103061?pt=UK_Holders_Mounts&hash=item1c31b61dd5

And have it mounted next to the central rear view mirror, so its unrestricted my driving viewing, and my eyes are not taken away from the road.

I have tried phones in lots of different locations, and have found that this is the safest location. I find it useful for my speed camera app :driving:

The limitation to this location is the power charger cable, as I have not routed an cable going around the windscreen.

The one I purchased has an clip, that I superglue to my phone case - and been using the same mounting for the last 3 cars I have owned.

I don't like blocking vents. I use the below to hold the iPhone for use in the other half's car on trips. Easily pops on and off, you can put it in a place it doesn't restrict the view too much etc.
