Dash computer scrolling and zeroing on its own.

Not all the time but enough to stop me checking my mpg, I have noticed that the computer that you normally controll with the button on the end of the indicator stalk is scrolling on its own. It even resets the mpg and changes the temperature from C to F and so on. I wondered if anyone had experienced the same and if I need to replace the stalk or what. My initial thought was to take the button off and see if it could be fixed but I didn't want to break it so gave up pretty quickly, and also when it is bad the button won't work which makes me think it's deeper than that.
