I have just read the post on hardwiring dashcam on an E85 can anyone advise if this is possible on an E89 many thanks

There is a detailed post by AnubisZed in the E89 section giving details of how to do this. I am not much good with electrics so I got my local auto electrician to read the post and he installed mine on my 3.5 is. It is front and rear and is a Mini 0906 which I bought from Combi Products in Leicester. The guy there is very helpful. Hope this helps.

Why bother, if you have the cig lighter socket in arm rest just run the cable down the windscreen pillar, around the glove box and poke the wire under the trim back to the centre arm storage, then around the back of the lid.
Use one of those thimble size adaptors and have two usb outlets, one for the dash cam and one for say phone or rear cam.
Cig sockets only power up when engine running.

Hardwire is better, but a bit of an nightmare of a job

If you okay been upside down and blood rushing to your head fill your boots.

I didn't think it was too bad, but I did used to be a full time mechanic

Just make sure you get the correct piggy back fuse holders as some don't fit

the "nighmare" is the fuse box. its the most horrible piece of design I've come across in terms of 1) location 2) access 3) lack of labelling. Once you have worked that out the cable routing is easy!

Is there no means of connecting everything up in the interior light cluster, as per the e85 installation guide?

Not sure the "box" that came with my hardwiring kit would fit in there. The box contains the votage sensor (not that mine worked.. I still have to unplug mine to stop it draining the battery!)

It's really straight forward!

Unscrew the passenger sun visor and pull the plastic away allowing the A pillar to come off.

Next access the fuse box (plenty of guides on here how to do this)

Plant the Camera onto your windscreen and plug your fuse kit into the the fuse box to test. (plenty of guides to which fuse to high jack, you can use the guide next to your fuse box. I used the cigarette lighter fuse)

Once tested, thread the wire through the top. You'll have to battle the A pillar back in.

Use the extra wiring to store next to the fuse box. I found a little area where there was enough room to store the wire and the box attached to my hardwire kit.

Battle the fuse box back into place!

Sorted :)

Just shows how useful dash cams are, i was about to turn right but was waiting for a mother and kids to decide if they were going to stop or cross the side road on the right. If i turned and that car hit me, they would swear the lights were green.

I agree flybobbie! My wife had a brand new Q5 and I had installed a front and rear camera system into it. A woman drove into the back of the car, cracking the bumber. She got out and swore blind that my wife had rolled back into her car. My wife (Very politely) informed the woman that the Q5 was an auto with hill hold assist and, most importantly, that it had a rear facing camera fitted and did she want to commit fraud by informing her insurance that my wife caused the accident! She admitted liability!
I have t fit a 'proper' dashcam into my Z4 but in the meantime i'm using a phone app called Daily roads voyager.
Too risky to drive without one nowadays with all the lying b@stards around!!! :D

Here you go, post 3 onwards of this thread.... https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=106665&p=1548406#p1548406

Fitting a front only dash-cam is sooooo much easier, but I went for not only the front & rear but also the Parking Guard which requires another fuse tap to run it :D Pleased I did and I'm very happy with my install :driving:
