So, I've just had my (completely screwed) wheel bearing sorted by an Indy that was recommended to me by a mechanic from a main dealer:

Darren Wood has 18 years experience working on BMWs, 9 years at Williams Manchester and a further 5 at Blue Bell in Wilmslow before setting up on his own. In the last year he's started up in a unit with Mike Nickeas, another dealer veteran. Their customers include the head of the BMW owners club (who's got a Z4MC ) and a bloke that brings his M3 all the way from Newcastle (upon Tyne)!

So I went to him yesterday with my wheel bearing, which turned out to have totally seized and gotten a little hot, meaning it had almost fused the hub to the drive shaft! It actually broke his puller trying to get it off! So he called a friend with a heavy duty puller... which also wasn't up to the job! So he put in a call to David Holmes (Stockport) and Blue Bell to borrow their new super-duper-mega-uber puller. By this time it was 7.30pm so they couldn't get it to him until this morning. So he apologised profusely and gave me a lift home.

So, the new puller worked and he called me this morning to let me know it was all sorted, and did I want him to come and pick me up to get it! On top of all of this, while he had it he topped up all the fluids under the bonnet and cleaned up the brakes and pipes etc while he had the wheel off. He also noticed that the rear spring had been replaced at some point (not the one I've just had done), so he sorted that for me too!

After all this, he only charged me 2 hours labour, got the bearing cheaper than quoted and even washed the car!

On top of this, we got to talking about this and that and he's said when I take my car in for an inspection 2, he'll do the gearbox and diff oils for me just the cost of the fluids :)

So, if you're even remotely in the vicinity of Manchester (He's in Bredbury, just off jnct 25 of the M60), or even if you're not, I cannot recommend him enough!

If you want his number, PM me (I don't want to open him up to the spam-bots by putting his number on the internets!) :)

What the location like for public transport, or is there a courtesy car or local station drop-off/pick-up service? How his he with M stuff?

I only ask as I need to take mine somewhere reasonable when I need non warranty-locked (i.e. inspections) maintenance, when it's not financially viable to go all the way down to Essex. Could be a good find

Didn't know the President (Trevor) had had a Z4MC - and I think the Chairman (Jeff) has got a Z1 (amongst others) IIRC, don't know what General Manager / Secretary (Andrew) drives.

Im in Manchester and would love to find a good indi to use...

However from what I understand, pretty much non of the indis will do the valve shim adjutement required on the S54.... :(

Not sure about the transport links really, I went and camped in Morrisons cafe for most of the day (not recommended!), then went and set up in his reception!

I did notice a lot of bus stops about that head into Stockport, and there's a trainline, so I reckon there must be a station fairly close (Bredbury's not very big).

I know he does pick up and drop off some of his customer's cars, so if you're reasonably local that might be a solution. I'm sure, failing all else, he wouldn't mind dropping you off/picking you up from Stockport station.

I can't remember who he said exactly, though Andrew rings a bell. Got a feeling he said chairman though... One of them anyway ;)

it's probably some special tool that's required, so if he hasn't got one he'll be able to get hold of one with his links to all the local dealers...

I'd put money on it that he could do it
I'll pm you his number :)

good find, he is closer to me than any dealer, next time i pass i will try and find him
